How does the charge get processed? Do you still get Amex return protection etc?

https://support.google.com/wallet/answer/2688794

You may not earn certain reward points and benefits for purchases through your card issuer's credit or debit card rewards program (such as overall spending and purchase protection or insurance). Keep in mind that for purchases where Google Wallet facilitates the payment and then charges your selected card, the amount charged to your registered card is charged by Google Wallet and not by the merchant where you make a purchase.

Rewards and benefits, if applicable, will be decided by your card's issuer. Your card's issuer (not Google Wallet or The Bancorp Bank) determines and is responsible for whether rewards points or other benefits apply to these purchases.

If you receive additional rewards when shopping at a specific merchant, these benefits may not be applied when using Google Wallet.

I just read this after making an order from Eat24 with my Sapphire preferred...

So I took advantage of this while it was free back in June, and was bored now and wanted to see if the $250 was alive and churnable. Created 3 accounts so far (all with my legit info) and sent 250 from each to my old regular gmail. The first already transferring to bank account, the next 2 are pending.

With the app, creating a new gmail and sending $250 takes about 5 minutes.

Any one else try this?

what info did you change for each account? email address?

Yep that was it IIRC. Only the first $250 worked (first excess account after the June fun), the others were all pending then eventually cancelled. Haven't taken it further.

DH has one. It's no help. You have to preload the card online to use it, so it's subject to the same restrictions, specifically the fee for using credit card.

Speaking of Google Wallet, there's an idea I've been thinking about. Google lets you use your phone to charge on your credit card, but what it actually does is charge a virtual MasterCard debit card, and then Google charges your credit card. The receipt on the screen shows you the last four digits of the virtual MasterCard.

Has anyone tried buying VR at a store that doesn't accept credit cards using Google Wallet? The store should think it's a debit card and you can give the last four digits from the screen.

I don't GW like that so I have no clue - do you have a full MC #? Do you have/can you set a pin? (IE can you load straight to BB at a WM)

No, you just see the last 4, and there's no PIN. You don't have access to the virtual card, it's just the mechanism that Google users to do the transaction. I should clarify that I'm talking specifically about using the phone app for contactless payment, not any card.
