Continental Complaint
« on: September 20, 2011, 01:51:19 PM »
I recently traveled to Cancun on Continental.  Bought the tix and used miles to upgrade to First Class.  Make a long story short, one of the flight attendants was super rude and unhelpful.  He and the other attendants basically ignored us the entire flight.  We were offered one drink the entire flight.  I explained that we were "kosher" and he said sorry, we don't have any of that here. I asked for plastic utensils and hot water to eat our Tradition soup with but he wasn't able to find any plastic.  All n all was a really bad experience.

I filed a detailed complaint with Continental on the phone.  3 months later and I hadn't heard back.  Called them today and they explained that there is no "compensation" for bad behaving attendants. That it's an HR issue and he will get a note in his personal file.  I said, so what does that do for me?  She said, sorry that's all we can do.

Anyone have any advice on how to proceed?  Is there any chance of me coming out of this with anything?

BTW, I've heard from a few poskim that you cannot use the hot water on planes. I'm sure there are those who disagree, but might be worth asking

I also called Continental about a bad experience, they said they forward my complaint to the proper people.  I asked when I would hear back, they said you won't, this is just for us.  I asked them, then what do i get out of it, they said sorry we don't give compensation.

When I had a complaint they told me its smarter to complain right when you land and that's what I should do next time. I did manage to get 5,000 miles though.

What's the reason?

What's the reason?
I presume its something to do with of the water is dispensed directly onto something treif, the steam rises and goes back into the machine.

Any such idea come up in smicha?

Yes. IIRC it was that, and that the pitchers in which they serve tea/coffee are washed together with milk/meat/treif with a commercial hose that shoots out insanely hot water, thereby cooking all the bits and pieces into all the keilim. The second reason is from info about ten years old, seen by a mashgiach that was watching Elal. It is entirely possible that things have changed, but I think the first reason is valid either way

I don't drink coffee, period.

Chaikel mentioned there could be problem, Dan asked what it was so I wrote a reason.
Doesn't mean you can't drink the coffee.

If you feel there's a problem, ask your LOR.

Btw, there are people who don't drink Starbucks.

Them I know about. I drink it. The CRC admitted in the final write up that it is only a chumrah.

My understanding is the following: When you go a bar and have a drink, they have a big machine just cooking water, and a machine just for the steam, etc.

In a plane, they are using little kettles (the ones they walk around with), and when cleaning them, apparently they get dipped in hot water and soap, together with all other cutlery and or utensils from the kitchen.

A few points:
Soap is pogame taam, and as such if it is used at the beginning of the washing process, it should be mater any issue that would otherwise arise.

Second of all, is that water coming out of a urn is coming from a kli rishon, and as there is no heating element in the kettle (maybe a dishwasher is different), the worst that the pot would be is a kli sheni (think simple hilchos shabbos). Now water in the pot emits steam, but a kli sheni itself, I believe, isn't nosane taam, so when the steam goes into the spout, what's the issue?

No different than any other bullshove during seder.  I always marveled at the ability to talk about things so far OT than the gemara we had started with.

That's why I love it...

Well, the gemara does a pretty good job of it as well...

What the person witnessed was that there was no soap until after the first "rinse"

What ergel said. There generally is steam from the kiluach.

Please explain.
Isn't the "treife steam" only after it hits the kli sheni, not it the air when its irui, but still kosher?
