DDF Intermittently Down?
« Reply #20 on: November 10, 2011, 10:02:24 AM »
I would say around 150gb of outbound traffic.
The fastest FIOS line would give you a little over 4 MB/s theoretical up. Your peak times may saturate that. I'm sure you can look at the logs to see peak traffic? Would that be enough? (Monthly traffic alone obviously doesn't tell the whole story...)

Verizon provides 8hr battery backup, plus there is a port for secondary power. Battery backup for the server shouldn't be too expensive. I wouldn't base it in Monsey, but Flatbush should be pretty safe. As a backup you could have it auto FTP backup to a host, get the cheapest package, and just switch to the web host and up your package if the servers main power will be black for more than a few hours. I really don't know that much about web hosting, but it seems like it should be feasible.

Sounds pretty good... But verizons battery only keeps the line up, the server also need power

You could get a apc for a few hundred $ that will keep the server running.

Sure, until there's a power outage, etc.

How often is there power outages?

And you'd have to bring (and maintain) your own hardware, backup etc..

An advertiser complained that clustrmaps was sending them thousands of requests a minute.
I've deleted it off of the main site.
Who knows maybe that's been the problem all these years :P (Here's hoping at least!)
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I doubt a standard VZW Fios line could sustain the current traffic of DD/DDF.
Just DDF, not DD. I don't think Dan would want DD based in someone's basement

Uh... I wrote that in my post

Not too big a deal. Most of the soft maintenance can be done remotely. A redundant HD array will eliminate the need for pressing hard maintenance. I really can't imagine it being that much work. Then again if it's a memory leak, adding RAM will only help you so much, and changing servers really wont do much

Yup because apache found a way to jump from 1.3gb to 600mb... hence why I think its leaking somehow...

So... I just switched the web server from apache2 to nginx. Memory usage is wayyy down as of now, I will keep monitoring the memory usage.

Please post if you have any issues (slower/page not found/cannot connect/etc).

Thanks.
