Staying inside shul until mussaf is over. Was a status symbol of being a big boy when I turned 12....

Probably deserves its own topic. I’ve come across many status symbols in different communities and types. For some people it’s how many chats they are on. For others it may be where they shop, what stroller they push etc. I remember talking with a group of guys and I mentioned a conversation  I had at the TU Conference one year and I got this look and a couple of comments from the crowd like “your one of those guys”.

My sister is part of a group where the vast majority go to pesach hotels. There was a conversation about the various options and my sister mentioned that she had decided to stay home this year. Dead silence.

For some the status symbol is what they won’t do. “You won’t catch me walking into THAT store. I don’t eat any shechita other than pelleh. When I go to a chasunah I ask for fish.”

What status symbols have you come across?

I would love to keep this and make a new thread and retitle: "has our community become too materialistic?"

This thread was an offshoot of the one on over the top purim party’s. That was the one on materialism. This thread is focused on status symbols.

And if you come back in 20 years you will find the children of these guys hanging out in the hall faithfully following the “mesorah” they observed by their fathers. Sad. These guys don’t realize that it’s not about them. They are modeling for their children, and perhaps even their grandchildren. They can tell their kids to go into shul and look in the siddur but their kids know what’s really important. Actions always speak louder than words.

No matter how many likes are taken or given, you can't take 770 away from me, or me away from 770.
This sounds like a challange
If you don't care why would you comment?
