Rabbi Or Mr?
« on: March 29, 2019, 12:30:55 PM »

A few people sent me messages like this. Not sure if I'm better off identifying as a Rabbi or not...
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

A rule of thumb I use in situations like these (and as a gabbai in shul) is to use the title Rabbi for those who serve as such in a professional capacity. All others get Reb or Mister.

Rabbi. For the very same reason you are in doubt
Time to reclaim the title Rabbi

As a matter of Kavod, I agree I always try to address someone who earned smicha as Rabbi unless they prefer otherwise (they earned it)! Totally separate question though, for the purpose of this podcast, is there a distinction not in title but were these other two rebbeim invited because they are poskim and experts in this area of halacha? Sorry, I didn’t listen yet and don’t know who they are, and before I listen, I just wanted to know why these other two guys were included (obviously I know why Dan, or Rabbi Eleff if he prefers, and his expertise were included). :)

Hit it on the nail. For some reason I'm Rabbi to everyone in Lakewood. Though according to @Denverite's guidelines, I qualify.  :P

Those that know me in person, know what my automatic response is if anyone dares call me Rabbi (FTR - unfortunately, I am embarrassed to admit that I don't even have semicha).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I LOVE this! I actually want to be like the other big Youtubers and just identify as vegan (still eat my meat) and make millions! How come nobody is defending their right to self-identify?! ;D

Also, BTW, for the record, Dan is the one who took the PSA Swiping thread off topic this time, not us...although, that was quick work from the mods to split the thread within like 5 minutes...  :P

In Lakewood it’s “Rabbi Goldberg cleanup  in Aisle 6”.

some people actually get insulted if you call them rabbi. I once did some work for a yeshiva fundraiser, and I set all Lakewood people to Rabbi and anyone else to Mr. afterwards I went by name by name and changed anyone who I knew identified differently to the appropriate one.

This seems to be saying that someone wh will work to live up to the responsibility should go by Rabbi and those who will make no attempt at it should go by Mr.

It seems the concern is to misrepresent the type of council and expertise he is there to give. He is not there to give halachic council so identifying as a rabbi in a discussion involving halacha might be misleading. However you have  Smicha and I think you should go with rabbi (or reb) and just clarify you are not presenting as a halachic authority.

Maybe it's time we made new names:

Reb: Frum no smicha.

Rabbi: Smicha not practicing.

Rav: Practicing rabbi of a shul.

HaRav: Paskins halacha.

Or something else better...
