TK 78 broke speed of sound?
« on: April 02, 2019, 06:23:36 AM »
Flight Aware shows a massive speed spike to over 960MPH!! Is that normal? Is it a mistake?

The air frame is not built to stand up to the stress of breaking the sound barrier.  This was likely ground speed.  Speed relative to surrounding air was below the speed of sound.  A strong tail wind allows the plane to achieve higher ground speeds than the speed of it's actual travel through the air.

There was discussion of this in the thread about the El al plane swap at Gander.  @TimT?

Even if that is true, it still a massive spike from 550-600 to 960

It’s obviously a mistake - just look at the spike on the chart.

But it stays above 800 for at least 10-20 minutes

Maybe they accidentally switched over to Kilometers for a few minutes
Memories last forever, make them while you can.
