Ticket issued to a car i sold 9 years ago
« on: April 02, 2019, 12:04:48 PM »
I traded in my car 9 years ago to a dealership. I got a letter from a collection agency this weekend for 4 tickets to me in nassau county. 2 for missing plates, one for expired registration over 60 days and one for expired inspection over 60 days. Both were issued in 2017.
I called the nassau courts and they said there were no plates and they issued to me based on the VIN.
I don't think i have the bill of sale or transfer of title form anymore (i will look).  I called NYS and they said since i traded in the car in 2010 there are other names on the title, but i cannot get a title abstract showing any owners prior or subsequent to me that are not under my name. They also claimed that Nassau should not have been able to tie my information to the car without plates.

Should i reach out to a lawyer? If so what kind?  Should i get a title abstract showing whenever it was in my name and mail that to Nassau County?
I am never in hempstead or anywhere close so i really don't want to have to go to court.

The fact that the NYS DMV shows other owners after me is confusing. Unless the other owners never registered the car and somehow they looked up registration based on VIN and i was the last person who registered it?

Maybe it was registered in a different state.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I would reach out to the dealership involved in the trade in. They should have record of the transaction which you can then use to prove you did not own the car on that date.

Is it possible to reach out to DMVs of nearby states, such as NJ, PA and maybe CT? How about Carfax, would they have registration data?

got it thanks. The issue i can think of is that there is no name on it relating to the titles or owners listed. Perhaps this combined with NY state title info? or call PA since they were owner in 2017?

Go fight City Hall. But if you're properly armed with information and arguments, you should prevail.

If it were a business, I would tell you to go the BBB, but any outlet with large name recognition and publicity is good in order to grease wheels and get justice.

you live in NJ on the carfax it shows that the next owners were in PA and NY.

personally, i will send out the carfax and a letter saying that "i am sorry but as you can see i sold the vehicle back in 2010, and i am not any more related to that vehicle. etc .. "

notarize the letter and send it with "tracking and signature" to have proof that they got it.

and i will move on ..

again i am not a lawyer, this is just my 2cent
