Amex Closed Accounts
« on: April 03, 2019, 03:37:11 PM »
I've been an American Express card holder since 2006 and a business card holder since 2011, both SPG. Yesterday I got an email letting me know my accounts were closed - see pasted text below. I tried calling them and all they would say was that there were charges identified as non goods and services and I would never be allowed an Amex card in the future.

I have never been late on a payment and had a $27k credit limit on my personal card and a $350k limit on the business card. My credit score is 820 and I've always provided them whatever financials they requested.

The only thing I can think of is that in previous years I put a lot of charges on the business card, over $6m a year and this year, because the Marriott points aren't worth as much, I've barely used it. I did have an Amex rep come down to meet me trying to get me to move my buying over to another card, but the rewards were not as good as what I am currently getting.

Has anybody ever experienced this and are there any options?

Thanks!

You're not alone, but unfortunately you are without recourse.

Common denominator among those closed is that the card(s) were used at one of the merchants running a scam/ponzi scheme, e.g. Toner, Sterling, Caretech, etc., which is probably what AmEx meant by "charges identified as non goods and services."

I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. I never put large balances on my cards and never was late on a payment. Never used my card at one of those merchants? Is there really nothing that can be done to get the cards reactivated?

Can we maybe take legal action against them?
Do they really have the rights to do things like this, without option of appealing?
It was my first credit card and now my credit history will bump a few years.

Yup, they had me leave a voicemail with a supervisor who called me back. He didn't give any additional information regarding the charges, or why they decided to close the account and was extremely curt and rude. I was very cordial and polite on the phone, I was just curious since this came from left field.

He said that I would never be able to open an Amex account in my lifetime, I shouldn't call them again and they would not call me again.

Hopefully this means that I will stop getting their mailings as well.  ;D

I don't know what MS stands for, but there was no funny business done on the cards. They were used to purchase merchandise and employee cards were used for travel.

Rumor is that Fidelity Payments does not want to this to happen so they are basically forcing amex to close all accounts

What happens to the points? Do you have time to take them out?
