@LevyE if all your charges is legit, file a complaint with the CFPB - www.consumerfinance.gov
I got a response back from Amex after I filed the complaint. I'm still in the dark.

"We’re writing in response to your recent correspondence to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. We closed your accounts with us in accordance with our terms.
We reserve the right to take action on accounts that do not comply with our terms. This action can include cancelling the account. According to your past account behavior, we have concluded that you have a pattern of not complying with our offer terms. We cancelled all of your American Express Cards with us on April 2, 2019 as explained in the enclosed emails sent to you on the same dates. You can review the full terms of your accounts by visiting us at americanexpress.com/agreements.
On April 3, 2019, we spoke to you about the cancellation of your account. We explained that after an account review we confirmed that you had used your Card at a merchant for items other than goods and services. We offered a call back and a supervisor called you back and explained the same. Regrettably, we were unable to provide you the name of the merchants.
We understand this isn’t your desired outcome, but we appreciate you allowing us to address your concerns.
Sincerely,
C. Vila

Yup, they had me leave a voicemail with a supervisor who called me back. He didn't give any additional information regarding the charges, or why they decided to close the account and was extremely curt and rude. I was very cordial and polite on the phone, I was just curious since this came from left field.

He said that I would never be able to open an Amex account in my lifetime, I shouldn't call them again and they would not call me again.

Hopefully this means that I will stop getting their mailings as well.  ;D
ouch oy

Someone just sent me the same. Unclear.
+1, seems unclear, some kind of pending status for the account - but im sure the AH will have to pay at the end. Shame it couldn't be a nice severance package:(

Thanks for the welcome !

Fidelity is working with card issuers to close accounts that swiped by these merchants as a deterrent for future cardholders

Fidelity was the card processor for a majority of the merchants

I doubt these small charges at Sterling could have triggered it, if this was the reason and they are looking at certain area codes and merchants, then keep trying to find out why, good luck.
Unfortunately it seems that a lot of these shutdowns have been systematic. So, charge amount does not necessarily matter. I know that sounds crazy.

Seems like there is one merchant that is still swiping cards at their grocery store... Perhaps its time for a wiki?

Conclusion: Amex has a new system in place that detects a pattern of swiping that would indicate cc spend is not for services or merchandise and shuts down accounts associated.

Story: Friend of mine does spending for merchant on AMEX cards in tune of 10k per month. Yes, I have warned him numerous times not to but...... no 1 is home . Each month at the end of billing cycle his card is paid in full and recharged. His and a second individual doing spend at the same merchant got shut down. There was no defaulted payments. My assumption is Amex is cracking down on this kind of behavior and rightfully does not want customers that are risky.

Always praying for delayed baggage.

Merchant might've been flagged, not necessarily a system flagging your swiping pattern.

I don’t get it he was spending for the merchant, so why is that not goods or services being provided?

He was not receiving any merchandise,
How would the bank know that ?

1) how was he paying his card each month
2) what kind of merchandise does this merchant offer

1. Merchant payed directly
2.  Clothing

My point is, Amex is picking up on spending habits and if someone is repetitively swiping at same merchant, maxing out each month it'll trigger some type of overview of account or possibly, if a terminal owner claims he sells  clothing retail and there are large CC charges from the same "costumers" over and over again amex will pick that up. Why would a clothing retailer have 10k+ charges each month from the same customer ?

I cant say forsure this is what's happening but based on the fact they closed accounts associated with people doing this kind of spending without YET defaulting, IMHO it's fair to say they have some type of system to pick up this type of behavior.

It’s basically telling the bank/CC, I am lending this guy your money that you wouldn’t lend to this guy.
