So I got a call from American Express asking me for my financials. I immediately shut down all my Amex cards. I am wondering if I will lose my existing spg points.

But now that you don't have the card they will expire unless you have activity on the account . I think it's once a year

Once you agree to share your tax returns with Amex! I know plenty of people that have been shut down by Amex (including myself) and they were all required to share their tax returns with Amex, even a year and a half after they closed their accounts.

SPG activity is almost too easy to attain...

Never was in that situation so have no idea. Still he has to make sure to do whatever it is. What easy thing qualifies as activity? Buy a drink at a hotel?

A drink works, as does any award redemption.

They did not shut me down. I Cancelled before they shut me. Does that make a difference? Also does transferring points from my wife's spg account to mine count as activity?

yea, but what does that have to do with the discussion? either way, Amex won't let you re-apply till you show them what they want.

I basically am in same situation.

I had my account shut down awhile ago. Now my points are gonna expire - anyone knows of a way that they wont? I doubt I'll make it to a hotel by then to stay and buy a drink...

Also I applied to the 30k starwood offer, I sent the request for them to get my tax info... But even after I get the card, the points wont hit my account before the ones that I currently have will expire

random1954 asked if there was a difference in whether s/he closes the accounts or if AMEX closes the accounts. Dan says no, but I'm stating what one of the differences would be. I for one would rather my credit report show that I closed the account rather than AMEX closing them. It's one less thing I'd have to explain if a potential lender asks me why AMEX shut down 6 of my accounts.
