Many of these guys get paid ten percent for accepting the funds, and then they forward the rest to whomever.

That’s good info and entirely possible. I agree either the Zelle account owner is getting a commission or they’re unaware. I’m leaning more towards the commission as well, but wanted to give them the benefit of doubt.

Yeah there are a lot of numbers of older folks that are used as Zelle accounts or these folks are knowingly part of a money laundering scheme. Either way you both should report those numbers to the police (in their jurisdiction) since it’s being used for money laundering.

This is so sad - I don't know why people do this to each other.  DDF has always been more of a community to me vs a forum, and hate to see these kind of things happen here.

Maybe we can get @Dan to add a feature where one can get verified (like X - formerly known as twitter) or a mark on new users up to 2 years + x amount of posts/likes...
Would hopefully help prevent scammers...

Yes, definitely someone I would stay away from. The picture itself would keep me away from doing business with this guy.

@pipe.official is a SCAMMER. Sold me $2100 of UA TB (gifted to my account). 2 days later, all TB has been removed from my account and united has put restriction on my account for travel bank fraud. Presuming he used a stolen card to gift travel bank. BEWARE

why is his account still active?!

It's pretty simple. Don't trade with new members unless you're feeling lucky.

Extra precautions should be taken when trading with new members.

Ideas include:
-Asking for references from established accounts and not references from new accounts, as those can easily be manufactured.
-Asking for goods from all relatively new members to be delivered before payment
-Asking for proof of who the seller is, with ID and DDF handle in the image.
-Speaking over the phone and calling the seller at a verified number.
-Agree to wait until after flight/hotel is used before payment is paid
-Use an escrow.
-Post your own ideas below.

Even with precautions taken, you can still get scammed with fraudulent items, an unethical seller, or even a hacked account.

@Dan is there somewhere we can post about new suspicious accounts before they scam others. I suspected @pipe.official was a scammer and even called him out before this whole mess, but I didn’t want to make it seem like I was witch hunting without any proof.

Is there a list anywhere of accounts known to be legit? Of course this won't solve the problem of a hacked account but may help with other issues.

yeah... but some people:
a) Are naïve
b) Don't read
c) Don't realize that a scam can be a scam (i.e. the ticket looks legit but then the airline cancels it after 3 days etc.)
d) Are stupid

I realize that class d) won't get helped from some added precautions, but a), b) and c) might.
Even just a line under a new member's pm saying [Warning - This Member is new. Do business with them at your own risk] may help...
