Limiting PMs for new members limits their ability to talk about other things also.  I've PMd new members about things they've posted that I didn't want to say in public.  Am I the only one? Do people only PM about things they're buying or selling?


There's been some talk about getting the other person's ID.  Perhaps getting someone in the real world to vouch for them would be helpful, but that would limit you to someone in your extended community.

All the time.
Still think more good than bad could come of them only being able to receive PMs (especially if you note that they will not be able to respond until they have more posts). There's at least one user who sends PMs sometimes but is apparently closed to responses - this wouldn't be worse than that.

How about limiting it GFST to active members, while new members who don't have prior activity can be added if they have an established active member vouch and take responsibility for them. (This solves CVs issue with referring associates to this forum) Otherwise they will need to wait until they build up enough cred, through posts or activity.

I don’t think it’s feasible to require every new member to have someone vouch for them. Most people prefer anonymity online, and would be scared off by a requirement like this. I personally would probably not be on DDF if there would’ve been such a requirement when I joined.

What about simply barring members with less than 250 posts from accessing that board?

I really don't have any issues. I would like to see this safe for everyone. I don't "buy" from this thread, so I have little to no exposure when I sell. Some of us have been here long enough so we know those members that are safe.

That was the same idea I had. I always use PP GnS when selling trading cards because of scammers. Great way to vet people and give both the buyer and seller some protection.

Heh. Was just reading over Shabbos where Rav Zilberstein discusses a missile in a southern kibbutz, and the radio announcer was excitedly saying how it could have been really bad had it been just 4 cm to the left. A few minutes later and another missile comes 4 cm to the left, with horrible results. The terrorists were listening, apparently. (He's discussing if the guy needs a kapara for it, and basically says probably unless the words were entirely lesheim shomayim to be mefarsem the nes.)

Simply spend the next 2 years wasting your time talking about random subjects that you really couldn't care less about for the slight chance for ripping someone off 900 bucks...

Besides, you would probably be able to tell when someone is actually ddfing for real, or not...

The requirement would be just for those looking for GFS transactions, would not effect likes garnering.

I had someone I knew IRL vouch for me for my first sale. I sent first, the buyer sent money after.  All via PM, so no one besides the buyer knows my connection to that other person.

It's absolutely expected that a stranger on the internet should not trust you.
