Kashering Lodge Cast Iron Pots
« on: April 04, 2019, 08:00:00 AM »
Just make smash burgers at home with a lodge cast iron pan on a high powered burner and a cast iron grill press and you will never look back...

Do you have to kasher a Lodge cast iron?

After some research it seems probably not, but I stuck it in the oven on the highest temp for a while and then reseasoned it with some oil anyway.

After doing some research I plan on it. Thanx. Also came across this.

https://www.amazon.com/IKO-Lightweight-Stainless-Vegetable-Pre-Seasoned/dp/B01LONJTP8

Says it’s OK certified. But it’s lightweight. Anyone have experience with it?

Ok I’ll elaborate.
IIRC the Rabbonim I spoke to were Rav Binyomin Forst who had done some research on his own into Lodge, and one of the senior Lakewood Rabbanim but it’s been a few years so definitely a good idea to ask your own Rav, preferably one who is knowledgeable in the metzius

. From what I remember Lodge was originally claiming their oil seasoning was ou certified, however they wre forced to withdraw this claim since there was no OU supervision. They still claim they use kosher vegetable oil. There are good reasons why they haven’t used the lard that was used to season cast iron 100 years ago; it goes rancid if the pan is not used very often.

So it’s a mashehu that is eino Ben Yomo (there is no be”ein when one feels the surface of the pan when new) that is extremely likely kosher oil to begin with.

Not going to do the job. Lodge is heavy cast iron that will sear the meat and vegetables in a way that the thinner pan never will. The riveted handle is a giveaway. Different beast.

I put mine in oven on self clean to kasher.  Then reseason.

You are doing marginally better than putting it in the oven at the highest setting ~800-850 vs 500F) but still not really libun by most measures; a visible red heat is generally assumed to be higher than 850F. The self clean ovens claim to go a bit higher than 850 but guys who measured several of them tell me that actually they mostly run between 800-850F. There are often other tzirrufim that we use to allow self cleaning an oven; the cast iron seasoning has as well. You would theoretically be gaining kibolo kach polto since I’ve measured operating temps of well over 600F on a high powered burner, but in reality that is not the case, since seasoning of cast iron always takes place under 500F- above that temp it will tend to burn out some of the seasoning and you will have to start seasoning it again, therefore heating it to self cleaning will likely not get you any further than 550F will. In the end of the day it likely needs no kashering anyway so as always check with a Rav.

(There are one or two color charts that show a very faint glow at around 800F but they are outliers; most  give a number appreciably higher than that...)

I am a vegetarian -- it is incredibly tasty.  I'd highly recommend trying the 2.0 version.

Definitely much better than 1.0, but it's got nothing on beef.

Aren't we talking about Cast Iron? What difference does it make what happens to other metals.

FTR, when I bought a cast Iron skillet I was told that self-cleaning isn't required (though I did actually do that).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Mercury melts at negative 37.9 Fahrenheit.
