You can't just compare dollars. Technology is becoming cheaper every day. So maybe also one should add what the cost of Bereisheet's technology equivalent would have been back then, to get a more accurate comparison. Because while we the USD lost a lot of purchasing power since then, technology became a lot cheaper, possibly even at a greater rate than the decline in the USD purchasing power.

No doubt it would be higher that Bereisheet's cost. But that too isn't a fair comparison, as there's a huge difference between an unmanned operation and a manned one. Also note that a possible part of Bereisheets failure to get a soft landing was the fact that they didn't have a landing engine where thrust could be controlled, it was on or off for the main engine.

There's no doubt that a manned craft would be designed with multiple failsafes and backup systems in case the primary plan goes awry. Certainly the Apollo crafts did. Beresheet did not- obviously helping to keep the cost low but also making it more vulnerable to failure.

Also, controlling a spacecraft from Earth is far more difficult than having a pilot on board. The signal can be lost due to interference, positioning, random freezes, etc. And every command is executed with a delay because communication only happens at the speed of light.
