serious question: chol hamoed & measles
« on: April 16, 2019, 09:32:38 PM »
at the risk of sounding "xenophobic", should i hesitate to take my children to the usual chol hamoed attractions this year?(would you?) my pediatrician forbade me to take my infant baby to lakewood or williamsburg until he is a year old due to the prevalence of the anti-vaxers in those communities (not exclusively those communities, but i would be more likely to travel there as we have family there). it occurred to me that the high concentration of jews from such communities makes it likely that the families we would be around in the usual locations (i.e. adventureland) could very possibly be from those communities. curious if anyone has put any thought to this....

Many Drs are giving the MMR at 6 months to those who will be in "problem areas."

In MI, an unvaccinated person went to a Sholom zochor (with the newborn in the house...) and found out a day or two later that he had measles at the time...

All infants above 6 months should get the shot. Otherwise yes, stay away from large frum gatherings with babies.

I know first hand of horrific measle cases in the community that are for some reason not reported.
The danger is real.

Are the cases you know about with unvaccinated?

He probably wants to know if that was the reason they're not reporting the measles cases.

Also, some people who got vaccinated in the 60's and 70's have low 'titers'. (I shows the strength of the immunity.)  There was a different vaccine given during some of those years that seems not to have worked that well.

Just curious. Also want to know if people that are already vaccinated are still getting it.

By horrific you mean long term or permanent complications  from contracting measles?

Did they know they weren't vaccinated? Was this someone who thought they had the measles before? Because otherwise I don't understand why they would go to that house at a time where there is an outbreak.

I know in Michigan many of the cases were folks in their 50's+ who were vaccinated with a bad vaccine that didn't work or thought they had had the measles and weren't vaccinated.   They are encouraging people to either get a booster shot or get their titers checked.

I personally would try to avoid congested areas with many religious people. Though obviously during yomTov that's hard to do. If someone is pregnant and definitely if they have an infant that wasn't immunized I'd personally avoid all such places. But that's just me.

In theory if your kids had both their shots they should be 97% immune to getting the measles. You can have their titers checked if that would help calm your concerns.

There has been at least one case that I know of regarding a guy who had both his vaccines and still got the measles.

Various news reports.
Also, allot happen to be unvaccinated because they're under the age of receiving the MMR and not because they're anti.

so if all of Rockland county is vaccinated, at 97% effectiveness, with a population of 311,000 at 3% equals 9330, and we only have 186 confirmed cases.

""Rockland county is currently dealing with 186 confirmed measles cases. New York City has had 329 cases since October. In just the last two weeks, Westchester has confirmed ten cases."""

Looks to me that we are doing wonderful, why all the noise??????????

Disclosure: I had measles in the 70's, my whole class did, 1 of my classmates passed away a few years ago due to a heart attack

I'm talking about mainstream media, not sure about the accuracy. Which part is so hard for you to understand?
