If you don't mind hopping a train south, you can pick up a decent vehicle in another state like Virginia and drive it back. Prices are cheaper down there, enough to justify the cost of a ticket.

I am just curious, how much life can you get from a 2000 dollar car?

Are you kidding that sounds awful.
My friend just bought a great looking car that's 6 years/70k miles that needs minor work for $2,500.

There's a chabad guy in CLE that goes to the auctions where the car dealers also go to get used cars and he gets great deals for people.
I'm sure someone like that exists in NYC too.  Otherwise come fly to CLE ;)

Take it to a mechanic you trust - many will check it out for $40-50.

I got a 2001 Grand marquis about 6 months ago, for $2000. Try to get stuff from friend of a friend (but still worth it to get it checked out).

When i came to a mechanic with a friend and his car, he advised me to not buy a car from a friend. He said even though everything might look good now, in the near future if/when something does go wrong it's not worth losing the friendship over. Rather buy from someone else so that if you have to you can deal with the issues without losing a friend.

That is a good point, although you could still get it from a friend of a friend - ask your friends to let you know if they know anyone who's selling their car.

Also, you oculd buy it from a friend if you go into it with the understanding that you're not trusting him on this point, you're getting it checked out yourself, and the deal is final.

If I was selling a car, I would encourage the buyer to take it to a mechanic, but would also make it clear that once the guy buys it, it's his - period, no matter what happens. Otherwise, "ain ladavar sof."

It wont pass inspection with a broken horn... $1500 for a 95 car is a lil steep (besides for all the issues it has.
