Legalize Scooter sharing in NY? Lime Scooters!
« on: May 07, 2019, 05:02:44 PM »
https://p2a.co/xji4eiL

I would love to have electric scooter sharing as a transportation option in my city. That's why I hope you will support Assembly Bill A7431 so that communities throughout the state can have access to dockless scooters.

In areas underserved by public transit, scooters can provide an affordable and reliable first and last mile transportation option — often only costing users a $1 flat fee and an additional $0.15-$0.20 per minute. The standard fee for dock-free bike rides is a third of CitiBike’s price and comparable to a subway or bus fare, allowing people of any income or zip code to move around more easily.

As cities around the world embrace micromobility, New York should not be left behind. Please take action to ensure new and innovative transportation options are available for communities throughout our state.

Can I count on you to co-sponsor A7431?

They are great.

But...before they get legalized in NY something has to be figured out with regards to where/how they'll be parked. NYC has very narrow sidewalks relative to the amount of people that use them, (not including all the added bags of trash and recycling,) and the parked scooters cause clutter.

It's already a bit of a nuisance in LA, and a big pain in San Diego and their sidewalks are way bigger.

IMO.

Byrd and Lime are very popular over here, especially around college campuses , very useful for students if the ride not long enough to use uber or lyft.

A real pain with a docking station membership and the list goes on quite expensive for bicycle.

Electric scooter don’t have docking station?
I have a membership with citibike it’s very convenient and well kept, the only issue is finding a spot to dock in mid town after 9:30 AM

No docking station. Just leave/dump it wherever you finish using it.

It's actually pretty successful in Tel Aviv where I work. For Bird there are certain "no parking zones" which does not allow you to end the ride at certain locations, in addition for both Lime and Bird you need to take a picture of where you parked so that you are held accountable if you obstruct the sidewalk (no idea who checks the pics or what happens)

The pics are a good start, but the main problem i've seen in LA is other people messing with the parking.

For example: There are locations where there are a bunch of scooters parked together, one person unlocks one, mistakenly knocks over the rest, and just drives off. Or, a person parks it on the edge of the sidewalk, someone else comes along and mistakenly knocks it over onto the sidewalk.

I hear, there needs to be more thinking into this, I have actually seen multiple scooters in the garbage! apparently some people (maybe an Israeli thing) if they find the scooter in a place they deem inappropriate, i.e. in the middle of the sidewalk, they simply throw them out.

And finally with the results...

Today, I have good news. Thanks to advocates like you, and the leadership of State Senator Jessica Ramos and Assemblymember Nily Rozic, New York has passed legislation to legalize e-scooters and e-bikes. This is a monumental victory for modernizing our state's transportation policies.

Please thank your lawmakers for their leadership by sending them a thank you email or tweet. It's easy to do and will demonstrate the importance of this moment.

SEND THANK YOU NOTE
As an early supporter of micromobility, we're hopeful that Governor Cuomo will sign this legislation into law quickly, and we are grateful for his leadership on improving mobility options for New York. Once that happens, cities will have the opportunity to develop e-scooter sharing programs.

Thank you again for your emails, phone calls, tweets, and attendance at hearings. This was a grassroots movement and it would not have been possible without your support!

Senior Director of Strategic Development - East

They pay users to charge them. Anyone can sign up, in the app IIRC, to do it.
In LA some people charge truckloads of them.

Slightly OT, but over 1000 Revel Scooters are already available in areas of Brooklyn and Queens.

These are like Vespas, not limes/birds, and drive with car traffic rules. $1 to open and ¢25 a minute, need to park on the street like Car2go.

Map attached.

Interesting, never heard of it.
I guess because they only have it by prospect Park and crown heights.

If I had to guess you live by the blue dot? Or were you driving at the moment? 🙂

When I was in LA in the beginning of the year I saw tons of these, but was shocked to see many vandelized, with some thrown bon the floor some with the wiring all broken and cracked.
Don't know how they work exactly and what happens in a rain store or snow storm, or extremely windy? What stops someone from vandelizing them and removing the tracking devices? I guess time will tell.
