A Boeing 737-800 jet operated by Delta Airlines made an emergency landing in Tennessee Sunday due to a “potential mechanical issue.”
The plane landed at McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville around 9:15 a.m. after taking off from Tri-Cities Airport in Tennessee. It was bound for Atlanta.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane experienced problems with its nose gear.
“Delta apologizes to customers on flight 1417 from Tri-Cities to Atlanta that diverted to Knoxville out of an abundance of caution following a potential mechanical issue," Delta said in a statement to USA TODAY.
“The aircraft landed and taxied to the gate normally and is being inspected by maintenance technicians.”
There were no injuries aboard the flight.
While the FAA investigates the matter, it’s not clear if the jet faced similar issues as the two Boeing 737 MAX jets that recently crashed, killing all on board.
Both Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after takeoff when an automated system intended to prevent the planes from stalling out malfunctioned, causing the planes to nosedive.
