Seat Assignment Logic
« on: May 21, 2019, 06:28:36 PM »
Can anyone explain to me the logic of the people seated in 3D/4D/5D?
Are they hoping that a TLV flight will actually go out with an empty J seat?

Even if it does remain empty, what do they gain by having an empty J seat near them? It's not like you need extra space in J to lay down, aka lay across 3 economy seats. You might as well take a window seat with assured privacy, too.

True. I was just trying to find any modicum of logic.

I would say they would rather sit in the middle closer up to the front then window at the back

Seems crazy to sacrifice so much privacy all to be a few rows closer to the front.

Weird but you see this all the time.

It's possible seats were booked then canceled.

Perhaps they were automatically assigned by United for pax that didn't select a seat.

Yup, I highly doubt that everyone put time or logic in selecting a seat.
On the other hand, why would you seat so close to the galley?

Maybe they have a flying companion in A and want to have walking access to them, rather than sitting next to them in the 2 middle side by sides.
I think I have done that before.

Now we're talking!
Though that makes more sense in a reverse herringbone configuration than a Polaris config.

Bulkhead in business have much larger footwells.

Seems crazy to take the risk to have a noisy galley all to have a larger footwell ;) though I can’t judge, I never saw it as an issue.

Certainly a trade-off. But I can use earplugs and an eyemask to solve the galley problem.

I hear, unfortunately the QC20s aren't too good in getting the full spectrum of noises cancelled.

Maybe they are lonely travelers eager to have someone's ear to chew off for 12 hours?

Or single travellers and have 10 hrs to get to know someone new.... (They can even hope that the second seat mate is well-off financially, unless they happen to be a mileage addict)

UA hides seats and slowly releases them for selection as other ones are chosen. The more preferred seats could have been unavailable when they selected them.

Not 100% sure they do this in J tho.

ETA: based on that 3D and 5D can actually be open as well.
