As a e-reader, the fire takes the cake.  As a tablet, not so much.
It really is just a $200 amazon vending machine.

There are probably more secure options, but Amazon Freetime should be built in. Set up a profile, add just Zoom, and launch the profile. They can still exit the Zoom app, but there won't be anything else to go into.

There definitely is I just have no clue how to do it. I know a yeshiva that gave them out and set them up like that.

kindles are difficult to filter.
Basic bypass - reset the machine.  You find out AFTER if you check if the password has changed when the kid reset it.
Better filter bypass - when on 'silk', the kindle browser, you bring up chrome.  and you're off and running.

Now I have Qustodio Free on my kindle. and I set it to shut down the the machine at off hours.  I think I'm/ my kid is safe now.
But I may be mistaken.

The built in filter was easily bypassed.  I didn't try it's curfew feature.  Or perhaps the curfew is independent of it.  I never tried it, and it may be effective.
Try to bypass what ever filter you use. I gave you ideas on how to do so.

Qustodio.com on line and in the amazon app store.

How is the Qustodio support? I have two kindles where the kids really messed around with it and Qustodio seems to be in a loop, it asks for the password to continue and then it takes you right back to asking for the password (yes, the password is correct)
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

I tried Qustodio on a kindle. The parent - child settings didn't always sync.
Also, through playing around in the settings it is possible to disable it. (I forget how, maybe usage access, device admin, clear storage... Something like that).
Not to mention safe mode which he might stumble on...

The best app that I found for a kindle fire is stayfocused by innoxapps. (Obviously you need the APK, I don't think it's on Amazon appstore). It is by far the most customizable and the most effective. It's also a great productivity app.

Check it out:
