His bet could only lead to a win if the leader was incorrect.

But what if she wasn't incorrect (which is what happened)?

Also, not if she only bet a few dollars being that she already had the lead and just needed to hope she maintained it...

Did you watch the clip?
What would you have bet in that situation?

Seems like he made the perfect bet to me.

If everyone is betting logically, #1 will bet enough to beat #2 even if #2 bets everything he has. In this case, if #1 was wrong then she drops out of the race. Therefore, #2 needs to bet enough just to beat #3 even if #3 bets everything he has. Which in this case was exactly the amount that he bet.

OR in simpler terms - he knew he wasn't going to win if the leader got the answer right. So he just needed to make sure that he beat the guy behind him just in case the leader got the question wrong.

-He knew the #1 would bet enough so that if she was right she would beat him. So his only hope of winning is if she was wrong. But since he could be wrong too, he had to bet little enough so that she would have less than him if they were both wrong.
-He knew he had to watch out for #3, so he bet enough to make sure that #3 couldn't catch him even if he bet everything and got it right, as long as James got it right.

But #1 got it right and of course she bet enough so that she could not be caught even if James bet everything.

The end  :'(

Yup.
Yup the most he could have gotten was 46,800 if he bet everything. She bet 20,201 which brought her to 46,801.

So apparently today's show was broadcast already. NYT has details on whether or not he was able to beat Jennings' $ record (he was less than 60k away after Friday). Won't share it here in case people want to watch the show "live" tonight, but he is the link (SPOILER obviously):

Goodness. Those comments make it sounds like he lost on purpose also.

Didn't realize it was already spoiled on JS.

The only critique on his bet could have been if #1 bet so little that if he would have doubled up, he would have been able to win. The only way that would have made sense for #1 to do would be if she would have thought that she would have gotten it wrong based on the category and was basically cutting her losses. From the NYT interview, the category was in her wheelhouse so she wouldn't have bet against herself.

I'm also curious as to when his competitors would have been able to see him. Since the shows are taped weeks or months in advance, it's possible that nobody playing him really knew what he was going to do. Does jeopardy provide them footage on recent games to prep with?

Apperently the woman who beat him had never heard of him before. She was called first of that days tapings, and since the tapings are secret, she didn't know he was a thing until the game itself.

The taping was in March, James didn't air until April.

Notice that he changed his twitter avatar to a screenshot from Weird Al's "I Lost on Jeopardy".

I wonder if Jeapordy will change any rules. I could see them eliminating 1 of the 2 Daily Doubles in Double Jeapordy as a move to reduce potential payouts/reduce the number of runaway games.

Just watched. Was pretty close. James answered more questions, but she got both daily doubles in double jeapordy... James got a DD on the first question of the game which only allowed him the smallest possible return.

He made the right bet only if he could be 100% sure what the leader would do. There was no way he could know.

He was right. She did exactly what he thought she would. Could be he studied past bets to know what the leader would most likely do in that situation.
