Discover cashback promo

I just called discover to register for this quarters' cashback categories.
The rep told me that my acct is eligible for an additional promo - if I spend $3000 every month from November through June in any category,  I will get $500 "cashback"/acct credit (besides for the regular cashback). Call to see if your account is eligible!

8 months x $3000 = $24,000 in spending
$500 cashback on $24,000 is about 2%

I doubt it is $500 per month. It seems he has to spend the 3K for 8 months first in order to qualify. Would they then give him his $4000 (8 x 500) credit? Looks like it is indeed 2%

To clarify, the promo I was offered is as follows; after $24,000 spend I will get $500 which is indeed 2% but this is on top of the regular 1%/5% cashback. So if use the card for purchases at merchants in the 5% category I will end up with 7%.

Not a bad deal, but of course if you miss hitting $3000 in 1 of those 8 months you get nothing.  But I agree it is worth it for others to call in as Discover has had many variations of this deal in the last year, some netting 5% or more.   My wife and I each did one (mine was $300 cashback for spending $1500/month for 5 months, hers was $150 for spending $1000/month for 3 months).  The cashback posts in the 2nd month statement after the promotion has ended.

Even on-top of the regular 1/5% CB I'd say it isn't that exciting. I'd much prefer the offer Citi AA extended to me over this offer, any day.
