The trick is to do both. Don't let taking pictures distract from what you're seeing - find a nice balance.

Once I got my pictures of the Northern Lights in Iceland, I put the camera down and just watched the show.

I try to do that as well, although I don't put the camera down just in case of those "fleeting moment" shots.

I guess that's more damaging, but I still don't think, given the momentum, trajectory, and distance, that it would result in loss of life.
