My math skills have nothing to do with it.

Its a way for people to realize, I don't want your $50 voucher at 80%, as it only saves $10.

So if people just say, $300 voucher, you'll save $68 dollars and have $7 voucher leftover or $200 voucher, save $50, it's much easier for everyone to understand what's being given and gained.

If someone offers you the $300 @ 80% you save $53 on this booking and have $7 left over. Why is that so hard to calculate?

Criteria
The original ticket must be on A3 (390) stock, but it does not need to book through A3 - travel agent bookings also work. Bookings through other airlines, on their ticket stock, will not be upgraded. Specifically, OA [Olympic] 050 stock - in spite of being owned by A3 - is not upgradable.
Only revenue (paid) tickets are upgradable - not redemptions.
You must be travelling on A3 metal - codeshares are not included.
There must be award availability in I-class for the upgrades to clear - use one of the many free or paid-for tools such as ANA website, UA website (looking for saver award space), Aeroplan, AwardNexus or ExpertFlyer to check.
Any class of ticket, including GoLight, can be upgraded.
One coupon per person per journey leg is required - so, for example, TXL-ATH-SKG and return via the same route would require four coupons per person.
Anyone can be upgraded using the coupons - you do not have to be travelling on the same booking or even the same plane.

Procedure
You must call A3 customer service to request the upgrade
If successful, a new ticket will be issued (with a new number). The PNR will remain unchanged.
You are liable for any extra taxes applicable to Business Class (e.g. APD from the UK). Sometimes this gets charged, sometimes it doesn't - if it's due and you're not charged because the agent forgets, you've just been lucky.

Benefits
No matter what the fare basis of the original ticket, including GoLight, you receive full Business Class benefits after upgrade.
This includes lounge access (useful if you're upgrading someone other than yourself who has no status) and full baggage allowance
Because the ticket books as a redemption, the free car hire is not included.

Mileage earning
You will earn at the underlying rate of your purchased ticket, not at a business class rate
On-line retro-claim did not work well on early upgrades and retroclaims were generally required. This was fixed in May 2015 and the original booking now credits automatically.

Expiry
The vouchers expire at the end of your membership year - they do not carry over, even if status is retained. A new set should be issued every year.
It is the date when you use the voucher that matters. It can upgrade a flight that takes place after expiry as long as you apply the voucher before.
On upgrade from Silver to Gold, any remaining Silver upgrade coupons expire, but they are replaced by four Gold ones which expire at the end of the Gold membership year.

Selling United Airline credit. I have 5k+. You can use part of it. Selling for 15% off. It only works on United flights and not on UA partner flights.
