. Let’s talk about this no-show policy right quick, which is at the crux of my issue. I had no idea this was a thing. Maybe I should. A quick Google search showed me that we weren’t the only ones unaware of this policy. Apparently, lots of people find out the hard way that if you miss your flight and don’t board it—say you grab a rental car and drive to your destination or buy another flight—you just might end up ****** out of the remainder of your trip. Most airlines do this. I’d have done better to check myself into that first flight even if I didn’t actually board the plane. I didn’t know. I know now though. Oh yeah, I KNOW NOW.
Well, not exactly.

Let's just sum it up that many people have legitimate reasons to hAAte AmericanAirlines. This guy is unfortunately ignorant, and the same would happen to him with other airlines. The entire article is a way of venting and saying "how stupid I am for not realizing the rules and thinking I'd save money".

And AA (and other airlines) really love this guy and people like him, as he seems to be quite a profitable repeat customer (that will probably make the worst use of miles awarded, if any).

The first plane we got on was trash. After an hour and a half on the tarmac, they let us know that the plane had a malfunctioning engine. We deboarded and had to wait more hours for a new plane. Right before boarding that new plane, we were informed the new plane was ALSO trash. A few hours later, we finally were able to board a plane, only to find out that the crew had been summoned to fly to Salt Lake City so we had to wait ANOTHER hour for a crew to hop off an inbound flight to take us to Atlanta. We left Dallas seven hours later than our ticketed time, but at least the plane wasn’t trash. And for our time and trouble, American Airlines sent me 2,500 miles. Yay, bitches. Yay.

This guy is stupid on so many levels. I get that if you fly once every few years you don't assume there's a no show policy, but come on, at least double check...especially after you just dropped a crap ton of money on the flights. I never thought preying on the stupid could be so profitable...

I don't know that I would have guessed such a policy even MIGHT exist before I started reading DD.

And given his conversation with the first rep, I would have used that as leverage to fight it.

Would you say there's no chance of success using that approach?

What does the "Contract of Carriage" state?

Until the US implements some kind of consumer protections in the aviation field, those things govern, and obligate the airlines to virtually nothing.

the guy is a boor, both as an airline customer and in general. He got caught in the web of misfortunes. I have a lot less sympathy for him than for some grandma who gets into the same mess because of the airline rules. AA is probably not any worse than the other US airlines.

Exactly.

I think he's an idiot for the way he dealt with it all, but it's not surprising that someone who rarely flies and never looks at travel blogs etc wouldn't even think of that as a problem.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for this guy in particular, but I like Gary's long-view take on this https://viewfromthewing.boardingarea.com/2019/07/17/how-does-the-average-passenger-even-make-it-to-their-destination-at-least-without-strangling-someone/

Quote
Travel is complex and hard and folks who aren’t well-versed, who don’t read blogs about it, who don’t do it every week run straight into what feels like a kafkaesque bureaucracy. My takeaway from this piece is a reminder of that, and it’s something that should be front and center for every travel executive — not just airlines (it’s a huge issue for Marriott Bonvoy as well).

Read as a cautionary tale about what it’s like to deal with how complex airlines have made buying air travel for the once a year flyer, rather than a rant about American Airlines, this may be one of the most important things airline executives can read this year, because profiting primarily by not delivering travel for customer money isn’t going to be a great strategy in the long run.
