This is all over the (Jewish) interwebs and I even got a call about it. This guy has the nerve to tell (not ask) me I must give him the $25 donation, what chutzpah! I have enough cards that if he asked nicely I'd actually consider it.

Its an opportunity that a lot of mosdos are trying to capitalize on.
Yes, anybody can go buy store credit at a local grocery, but there are some generous people out there that wouldn't mind throwing 25 bucks to charity when it doesn't cost them a penny.

He called me and immediately went into a torrential description of how the program works. At the end he say "since it's free you lose nothing, so you should give it to me". I ask "Do I have to?", he says "Yes, you must". That finalized my decision.

Hopefully nobody donates to a bunch of mosdos (on one card) and gets one refund. I can see this happening to someone who isn't too savvy.

on the right side of the page,  it mentions a $36 donation because thats the generic page, but i emailed one of the people behind the website, and he said only when it is accessed through the link given above, the information is stored and a donation of $25 will be processed on 11/26.  if done through the regular donation page, it will be processed normally.

I actually spoke to my Rebbe/Rov about this today. He basically said if you could have spent the money elsewhere on yourself and instead gave to tzedaka you can 100% take it from maaser. The shaila is if you're living here in E"Y and it won't work for online purchases, which leaves tzedaka as the only option available, in this case you wouldn't be able to take it from maaser.
