How to wash tzitzis without ruining them?
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:59:16 AM »
I've tried putting the strings in a sock, doesn't always seem to work. Any other ideas?

Is it the washing that ruins them, or the drying?

My mother always just washed them in the sink with a little bleach and let them air dry outside.

you could try one of those netbags and wrapping the strings in foil or handwash them is prob the best

Wool or cotton? you should never use bleach on wolol it turns it yellow (being that the strings are wool you'd have that problem even with cotton).

Wasn't all that impressed with their sale price, if i remember correctly. A little over a year ago, there was a sotre on Ave. J that had the ones with thick strings for $13.

FYI There's a chassidishe Guy who cleans Taleisim with Ataros beautifully.  he has his secret detergent mix, which really works.

well, in morristown yeshiva, they have a deal with the dry cleaners that if you spend more than a certain amount (i think $8), he'll do a pair of tzitzis for free. i've done it when i was learning there, and it came out pretty clean.

'pends on how much it costs - but if dry-cleaning an item costs 15% of the original price, that seems a bit steep for me.

On the other hand, if it doubles the effective life, then maybe it's worth it...

i don't know. I'm wearing this pair for years, and it still doesn't need to be washed.
what color are they now?!

ive only seen ppl wash it in sink with soap (or bleach) and then let them sit in a bucket soaked for a bit. after that ull just have to untangle the strings
i figure that cleaners would do a good job, (if money's not the issue) though i never tried it.
but personally i dont bother washing them, i just get a new pair every 6 months (b4 pesach, b4 RH)
