Southwest pulling out of Newark airport, groundings cited

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Southwest Airlines is pulling out of New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport following extensive delays caused by the FAA’s grounding of the Boeing 737 Max.

In a statement Thursday, the airline says it is taking steps to “mitigate damages and optimize our aircraft and resources.” It will cease operations at Newark and consolidate them at LaGuardia Airport in New York effective Nov. 3.

Southwest says the airline’s approximately 125 employees at Newark are being offered positions at LaGuardia or can bid for other jobs elsewhere.

Southwest began service at Newark in 2011. The airline offers up to 20 departures per day to 10 cities, including Denver and St. Louis.

The FAA grounded Boeing’s 737 Max in March following two fatal crashes involving the airliner in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

This is a disaster for New Jersey residents. No, Southwest, LGA is not EWR. LGA is always a nightmare. I guess PHL is going to be my new go-to.

What is so special about Southwest to EWR? Isn't the market is already over saturated and you can pretty much go anywhere with UA and Jetblue?

Personally I love Southwest for domestic flights; partially because of the simplicity of it.

It's still not EWR... And they kept UA honest on some routes, that's definitely going out the window now...
This is really a bummer.

I'm surprised EWR-LAX never happened. Since they can't fly to the west coast from LGA, I'm surprised to flew to Oak from EWR but not to LAX.

It's only united and Alaska from EWR - its not like they were also competing on that route with jetblue, AA, and DL.

for those of us that use EWR as our home based airport and have a companion pass, its terrible.
but hopefully its temporary.

Not sure if blaming it on the max is an excuse (pandering for PR and/or negotiations with Boeing for compensation), or if it was a real factor.

It doesn't make sense to pull out because the max will be grounded longer than expected (they are pulling out in November, the max will likely return to service Q1 2020, so we're talking 6 months max in all likelihood).

I could see that they were looking to EWR to be a long haul base in the NYC market which the max could play well for, but killing the whole plan because of the grounding doesn't make sense.

DDMS doesn't explain why they'd hype up 737 MAX as the reason. I suspect it is for PR/legal reasons.

It take years of logistical nightmares for them to fly out of different airports...if it would be temporary they would never cease all operations.
