Amazon gc scam/ safe to buy

Someone that I've met was offering to sell me an Amazon gift card that he says he got as a gift but has no use for,  he offered to sell for almost half price. Can this be a scam? assuming I only pay once code works and gc is deposited in my account. Can I still get scammed even though balance is in account? Thanks!

I would say once it's in your account your fine.
  Pretty much the same like a Chase qp payment or the like.

he can claim the gift card was stolen and they can shut your account. Only buy from someone you trust

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is
