Tips when renting with Hertz:

Hertz #1 Club Gold Plus Rewards Program
The Hertz Gold Plus RewardsŪ program is free and very beneficial. You can enroll Here

 A) After your first Hertz Gold Rental you do not need to go to the counter again (At locations that participate in Hertz Gold Service).
They will have your receipt preprinted (and waiting for you in the car at many airports), so you can just drive out!

 B) For every dollar you spend they credit you points on the base rate of the rental and sometimes they even have double or triple point promotions.
These points can be redeemed for free rental days starting at 550 points for a weekend day or 2750 for a week.

C) Earn Elite Status quickly. You'll reach Hertz Five Star after just 7 rentals which will get you a complimentary 1 car class upgrade if available.
At 20 Rentals you'll reach Hertz Presidents Circle with a guaranteed complimentary upgrade. Upgrades are to a maximum of a premium.
There are many other benefits. check them out Here.

AAA gives up to 1000 hertz points as a signup bonus or you can signup here for a 500 point signup bonus.

CDP
A CDP is a corporate account number but is not limited to private companies as many sales are tied with designated CDPs.
To find  cheap rates try different CDP corporate numbers many can be found in this thread or in the Car Rental Corporate Code Roundup thread.
Most CDPs do not waive underage fees with the exception of USAA (77694) but may be subject to proof of membership, and the Yeshiva Group (2046380) both waive the fee down to 18 y/o and have very good rates. AAA may also waive underage fees if the renter is above 20 years old.

Other great codes are:

Yeshiva: 2129719 Waives underage 18-19

Amex Travel Services: 1022855

AAdvatange: 217692

LAMC 3 marketing: 1906870

Yeshiva Student Association: 1876837

Chabad: 1908469

CBS Travel :  1976539

AAA: There are multiple 212 and 240 are examples or you can just type in AAA in cdp and it will come up

Car & Driver: 1757580

There are many more but we haven't found them to be cheaper then these.

To get your own CDP
You can sign up HERE if you are a sole proprietor or business owner with fewer than 100 employees.
You'll get 5 bonus credits for enrolling, an additional 5 credits for enrolling online, plus double credit for all your qualified rentals during the first 90 days after you enroll.
Every 15 credits you earn 1 free rental, and you can get a discount of up to 25% off on every rental worldwide.
After you join, you'll receive an e-mail within 2 business days to with your company's Corporate Discount Program (CDP) number and all the details of the program. Link.

CV Codes

CV codes are ConVention codes and go in the "Convention Number (CV):" box.
"CV" codes are hit or miss they can give amazing rates better then any CDP or PC or they can leave the rate the same, and they also work in conjunction with any CDP and PC code.
It doesn't hurt to add it to a reservation and can pull up flat rates of $30 a day for a premium car.
This works especially well in places that are expensive and often lowers the price substantially especially in major cities like NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami.
Meeting rates generally include unlimited mileage. CV weekend rates start at 12pm thursday through 12pm sunday. Friday pick ups, require a minimum 2 day rental. Extra day rate for weekly rentals is 1/5th of the weekly rate.

PC Codes

PC codes are Promotional Coupons which vary from time to time and from rental to rental check HERE for a well kept list of the current valid codes and here for an alternate list (looks like the alternate list hasn't been updated for a while - most pc's are expired).

Other Useful Tips
Play with the dates and times:There are different rates for different times (high season - low season) so if you are flexible it may pay to check days before and after pick up. Generally weekends are cheaper than weekdays so if you pick up on a weekend it can lower your rate substantially just remember weekends start at 12pm on Thursday. Additionally sometimes an extra day on a weekly rate can be much more than the rate per day with the daily rate, try making the reservation only for the week and then extending it either at pick up or even during the rental.

Local Editions: Airport rentals are generally more expensive than Local Editions as there is airport fees and taxes. So look around ideally for Hertz locations in or at airport hotels that are accessible via the airport shuttle.

One way rentals:
When you are looking for a one way rental, every country and every corporate number will give a different price, usually its 1 of the following 3, either it will cost per mile or it will be unlimited miles with a drop fee or unlimited miles with no drop fee.
Look out it happens  sometimes the car you select they will charge $0.25 per mile while the next car class over will be unlimited miles with no drop fee, when it comes to one ways always look at all the car classes, I have seen many times a midsize SUV to be cheaper then a full size car.
Another thing to note is that certain locations in the same city will have a drop fee while others will not, for example to rent one way to NY, if you return to lynbrook NY there will always be a drop fee while if you return to brooklyn there is no drop fee and JFK will have a drop fee sometimes depending which country you use, sometimes it might be worth searching other pick up and other drop off locations nearby to get a totally different rate in a one way rental.

Underage
Many Hertz CDP's waive the underage fee in the usa - for example the Yeshiva association and USAA. Some countries do not waive underage.
UK 18-21 can not rent. 21-25 30GBP underage fee - no CDP's seem to waive atm.

Hertz Rate Matching
For most of the corporate locations in Europe, the UK and Australia it is sometimes possible to get Hertz to match their competitor's price so you can continue to earn points and status and enjoy their service.
Speak to your local Travel Agent.
Competitors Hertz will match.
Europe: Auto Europe, Avis, Enterprise, EuropCar, Kemwel, and Sixt
Australia and New Zealand: All

Get a status match real quick by messaging them on Twitter

After you have rented please share you experience with others in the What did you reserve? What did you get? thread.

Thanx

PC# 135892 gives $10 a day up to  $40 for a weekend or weekly rental, so far the best PC they had in a while..
Yes that PC is listed there! BTW contrary to the terms it usually works at neighborhood location as well.

No, if its in the reservation you have to pay it, play around with diff. CDP to find one with no drop fee

In fact the reason the rates are different by other countries because its a discount for the citizens of that country or region  so no matter where you are when reserved you should still be eligable.

That was exactly my argument with them to get them to honor it and it was like talking to the wall.

get the hertz points instead...with double/triple points you'll get a few free days which will be worth more than the miles you'd earn IMHO...YMMV

even w/o triple points you still get 1.1 points per dollar spent on rental fee...so with free days starting at 500 points you should still be better off with hertz points if youve had a few months of rentals...

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.

Tips how to search for a cheap rental with Hertz:

1. CDP: Try different CDP corporate numbers, you can search on the forums and you'll find many. Here are a few good ones that I use:

USAA: 77694 (its subject to ID but it rarely happens that they request it)

AAdvatange: 217692

LAMC 3 marketing: 1906870

CBS Travel :  1976539, :)

There are many more but I haven't found them to be cheaper then these.

2. Different Countries: Hertz offers different rates for people that live in other countries. If you have ID from a specific country or your address in your hertz gold account is from a specific country than use this country and you will most probably not have a issue (even in places that usually don't honor it), otherwise its a risk of them asking you for proof of residency from that country and they might not honor it, most times it will get honored but sometimes it doesn't especially in locations that too many people used it already for example JFK, LGA, Brooklyn (park Slope & atlantic) etc.. The best would be to use US virgin islands because they will most likely not ask you for proof. But nothings a guarantee that they won't. Try using the hertz site of different countries to get cheaper rates the main ones to check are:
-USA
-Canada
-Any South american country
-South africa
-Germany
-Any arab country -France.
But you can try all countries, they may have diff. rates.
Some of them include sometimes full insurance.

3. Play with the dates: its proven that after playing around with the dates its possible to end up with the same dates for a much cheaper rate, usually this applies to last minute rentals, it's hard to explain how to do it but basically if you would like  to rent for 1 or 2 days in middle of the week it can happen that a daily rate for 1 day is more expensive then a daily rate for 3 days,  what you do is you try searching for 3 or 4 days then click modify - (I mean modify before you complete the reservation while you are still choosing which car) - a few times back and forth and the rate can change also try different days of the week like from monday to wednesday can be different then wednesday to friday select it and then modify the dates.
same applies to a weekly rental, try other weeks that are cheaper and then modify back to your dates.
When doing a weekend rental it depends what day, what time, and how many days you are renting for. Sometimes It can be a few different rates on the same day.
Let's say you are looking to rent from thursday morning at 11 till 11 friday try searching from thursday afternoon or friday morning until monday, that way you get the weekend rate and then modify it to your hours, make sure it will be after 12 otherwise it won't let you get the weekend rate and you can go in to the location an hour early. You can also make the reservation from Thursday to Monday and return it on Friday to get the one day rate which it wouldn't let you book.

4. Coupons: hertz offers many coupon codes to take off a few $$ a day off your rental. most of them are for weekly and weekends but sometimes even if you rent 1 day you can save $5 -$10, they can be found on -Hertz.com and in the monthly emails they send out to their gold members (elite members sometimes get better codes) or in the back of a rental receipt they print out at airports.
Always make sure that the promotional coupon gets accepted in the reservation while you book it online, it happens sometimes that the system will not accept the coupon code or even if it does the price will go up, in that case what can be done is after the reservation is completed and booked, modify the reservation and try adding the code again, if it still will not accept it then you probably did not meet its T&C and it will not work. I have had success adding a code which didn't even work online by calling in to the reservations desk.
If it is not in the reservation you can try your luck at the desk but it dose'nt always work

6. Week +  or long term rental:
You go to a different city on vacation or to visit family and you want to rent a car for a week or 2 or more, you will obviously search for rentals in the airport that you will arrive at and at the airport it is usually more expensive as well as all the extra airport tax which is not a flat rate, it depends what your base rate is so the longer the rental the more airport tax there is.
The best thing would do is to search around in the city at HLE locations which is usually much cheaper and search there for the week long rental then try to see if you can maybe take a taxi from the airport to that location or even rent a car for 1 day one way from the airport to that location, there's usually no extra fees to return at a different location in the same city this way the total price  of 2 cars can come out much cheaper then 1 car at the airport.
Same point applies for other rental agencies.

Seems Hertz lowered the PC requirement to 30 rentals a year. (IIRC it used to be 40.)

Searched all over but couldnt find an answer.

I have a $100 " Hertz Customer Satisfaction Car Rental Certificate" that i would like to sell, but not sure if i can.

In the T&C it says "...may be used only by the person named above."

Anyone have any experiences with these? Will they check if names match?
