Can kollel yungerleit qualify for foodstamps in N.Y. Or they need a registered job?
I applied for FS in Brooklyn in April 2013. Applied through access nyc (
https://a858-ihss.nyc.gov/ihss1/en_US/IHSS_homePage.do). IO am learning in Kollel, just said that I worked for a company and got a letter saying that I worked there w/ a salary less than my rent. Said that my wife was a full time student. Said that my assets were over 15k. The application went through w/o any problems BH. They called me for a phone interview, asked me how I cover rent since I reported that I was earning less than my rent cost, said I was using savings. I had to go down to the HR center (then in Coney Island right by all the projects
) and give them paperwork showing that I earned what I reported (just a letter on the company letterhead) what my assets were (bank statement two months old) and how much my rent was (letter from the building management). They approved me for over 350 a month.
A month or two later they wrote to me that my wife and I needed to work min 80 hrs a week or go to their class to learn how to apply for a job min 30 or 35 hrs a week. Didn't matter if the work for 80 hrs received a salary, just that we were working. My wife and I are both FT students and don't fall under those rules but when I went down to the center w/ proof, (letters from school) they didn't even bother to look @ them, said it was np and not to worry about it.
