Hey guys- anyone ever been to Maine before?

I'm thinking of taking a trip there for a couple of days with my wife... but I don't know much about the tourism there.

Probably no kosher food, I'm assuming... any places worth seeing/going to?

Im wondering why you dont pick a place that has some attraction that you already know of, and then plan the trip around that.

Boating, camping and fishing in Maine is popular. Catch something kosher, clean it, and eat. Not sure what else.

actually in Bangor there is an Orthodox Shul and DownTown if 1 can call it that is a jack of everything store that has a Heksher from the Rabbi of the shul.Or at least that was the case when I was up there a few yrs ago.

It was a Bagel store with salads etc etc , also had Fleshig stuff dont remember much about what they had as I didnt want to be Fleshig. I couldnt find anything out about this place I assume they closed up, call the shul and ask

Because we've done that, too.
I'm stopping off in Massachusettes, and trying to pick something within driving distance.
I've been to RI, MA, New Hamshire, Vermont... Trying to pick something new.
Boats and scenic stuff is cool. Just wondering if there's anything else I should be aware of.

I went on a photography trip with a friend to Acadia NP a few weeks ago. Even with the horrible weather we had (constant fog), we had a great time. Acadia is absolutely beautiful. Check out the Schoodic Peninsula area of the park - a bit out of the way but so much nicer for it. Much quieter and less touristy.

Most of the places to stay in the area are on Mount Desert Island (where most of the park is) We stayed here - the place was minuscule, but nice and clean (and cheap).

There's also lots to do on the island besides for the park - Somesville is a lovely little town, and the Bass Harbor Light is an unbelievable sight - it's considered the most photographed lighthouse in the world, for good reason.

Also check out Acadia Magic, it covers the entire area very comprehensively.

Schoodic Point. The most amazing shoreline I have ever seen. The rocks are pink and black granite – imagine what this would look like in nice weather.

We planned to shoot the sunrise – got up at 2:00 AM, drove to Schoodic, hiked out to this spot in the pitch black, and were in position for the 4:00 sunrise. The sun, however, slept in.

A user PMed me to ask about my trip to Maine in 2008. I wrote up this whole response and then I thought I should share it with the forums. Here it is:

I was only really in Maine for 2.5 days or so. I spent about a day in Portland and the rest was in Acadia National Park.

First stop was Portland Head Light (http://www.portlandheadlight.com/). We drove straight there from Monsey so it was a nice place to get out and stretch/walk around a bit.

Then we stopped by an Alpaca farm just to see the animals. http://www.wintersgone.com/store/ It was pouring rain so we didnt really see much here. Later on in the trip we went to a different Alpaca place which was very nice.

We stayed overnight in Bar Harbor just outside of Acadia Nat'l Park. ~~I don't recall the name of the place~~ (I found it! www.sunnysidecottages.com/‎) but it's an independently owned hotel with small bright yellow cottages all over the property. Downtown Bar Harbor is beautiful and great to walk around.

We also stopped at Black Woods Farm Alpacas in Cherryfield, ME, and Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Baring, ME. If I remember correctly, we were able to pick wild blueberries for free in Moosehorn. http://www.fws.gov/northeast/moosehorn/opportunities.html
The Black Woods Farm folks were extremely nice and explained a lot about Alpaca breeding, care, and the uses for their fur. http://blackwoodsfarmalpacas.com/

All of that was in the first 4 days of our trip. We like to try and pack a lot into our vacations

After Moosehorn we headed into Canada.

I will try to type up some summaries with links of my trip through New Brunswick, Halifax and Cape Breton Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. I'll edit this post with links to those summaries if I get around to doing it.
