I still think it's weird for everyone to assume the orthodox divorce rate is increasing without any real data one way or the other.

What do you see in your circle?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Jewish Divorce Rates
The most recent available study on divorce statistics among those of Jewish faith states approximately 9 percent of those surveyed have been divorced or separated. A 2017 article in The Jerusalem Post reports the divorce rate among members of the Orthodox Jewish faith is on the rise. The reasons for this include changes in society's values, the desire for instant gratification, and a disconnected world.

Real data would definitely be more convincing but I think in the absence of it then many people with similar anecdotal observations is definitely worth something, no? That's what might be going on here.

I have no idea if this makes sense mathematically or scientifically, but that's just my thought.

Agree. A couple things to consider if all we have is anecdotes:

-A growing population means a higher divorce count even if divorce rate is flat. Hearing about more divorces will make it seem more common.
-Social networking and being connected to far more people than previously means we will know more divorcees personally and news about it spreads faster and further.

Rate is going up.

Only one article shows the rate is going up, and over a 10 year period (2001-2011) it went from 7.5% to 8.6.
Doesn't seem so drastic, and if our modern society was corrupting everyone I would think it would be growing faster than this.

Source? In the first link from your earlier comment, the article addresses the Orthodox (through quotes from Orthodox divorcees), but the statistics quoted (from the JFC - UIA study of the 2011 NHS) clearly reflect the overall Jewish population, not the Orthodox population alone. The second link makes it sound like it pertains to the Orthodox (as in the part you quoted), but if you click through to the JPost article, it's about divorce throughout Israel, and not exclusive to orthodoxy. The third link makes no mention of Orthodoxy at all.

New question:
Is it better to call a non-jew a Goy or a gentile.
Are they considered offensive?

Whether it's offensive or not my just depends on how thick the skin is.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Depends on the person, and the context. For example, referring to your non-Jewish friend that you have a good relationship with as a shabbos goy, is probably not offensive. Saying it as 'You're such a goy!" - probably more so.

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.
