So the logic here is associate the pain you inflicted with something they did wrong? Wouldn't a child have to be thinking rationally to make that association? To take that a step further if they are capable of thinking rationally isn't there a better way?

I take it you don’t have kids. 20 times explaining to a toddler to stay away from the stove and not to touch the pot on the flame because he could get a burn doesn’t accomplish what getting a slight burn one time will do. A calmly meted out light slap on the wrist when he tries to touch the pot after being told several times how dangerous it is  will save him from having to experience the pain of touching the pot to be persuaded. Of course, if you are not showing him complete love and dedication the rest of the time that slap  on the wrist will likely be taken the wrong way.

Ok so with this logic I would break his arm or leg to make sure he will never forget not to do it again. More pain more gain?
Your pot logic is flawed as many kids do it more than once.
No. With this logic you'll hit him. Let's not go crazy.

Your kids first painful lesson about running into the street might be his last r"l, I'd rather let his lesson not be a deadly one.
Do all kids run into the street? If not for those that haven't I guess their parents beat the living sh*t out of them before it ever happened?

Your guesses and logic is heavily flawed. Some kids never ran into ths street and didn't need to learn a lesson, doesn't mean their parents beat them.

I do/did have kids and I hope you don't. My kids were never burned by a hot pot. This hot pot logic is not working for all of you.

Didn't need to learn? How does a 5 year old learn not to run into the street without the sh*t being beat out of him?

IIRC you have 2 children. That is an r extremely small sample size. I see that with my 10 too. Each one is different and needs to be taught differently and none of my neighbors children are similar to them.

My kids are little so like a slap on the wrist.
I feel a little pain now can  save from a lot of pain later on.
If a small kid does something that needs a harsher response, I'll take their hand, slowly pull-up the sleeve, and with a stern face give a little slap on the wrist. ( It's done almost in Slo-Mo )

It doesn't really hurt, it's the tense buildup and the fact that the child has gotten a "Potch" that will bring them to tears.

They know that they crossed a red line and usually don't do it again. ( Varies of course )

By getting a slap on the wrist.
My point is some kids never run into the street. How did they learn never to run into the street? You give them a slap on the wrist and said don't do this?

I am just trying to understand the logic of inflicting pain.
Is it a deterrent?
Is it to be associated with something bad?
Is it to be associated with something they are not allowed to do?

i think it's meant to make a nerual pathway the same way you don't touch fire cause you know you will get hurt same here you won't run into the street because you know you will get a slap

I didn't stop reading. Sometimes when you think you are writing clearly so other can understand does not always work out that way.
Are you saying your 10 kids never ran into the street (I see that with my 10 to)?

I get that so we are back to the original question. How do kids that never ran into the street learned not to do that?
