Does Israel have a draft? If so are both men and women required to register?

In Israel men and women are obligated in mandatory military service at age 18.

IINM men is 2.5 years (used to be 3 years) and women is 2 years (maybe shorter).

Women can get an exemption if they declare they are religiously observant.

IINM there's also an option to do civil service instead.

Yeshiva students have been eligible for a deferment since the early days of the state, as long as they certify that their sole occupation is studying torah. There have been various tinkerings with this throughout the years, with limits on ages, time, etc. But essentially it was previously an accepted procedure, and then later on the supreme court forced the government to enact a law. Ever since then it has been a contentious issue. First a law was enacted, then it was struck down by the supreme court, and ever since there have been various political solutions, fights etc. on how to resolve the issue.

While Israel probably no-longer NEEDS a mandatory draft, it is seen as a melting pot and entry into Israeli civil society.

Think about it a little bit like the Euro.

The Euro doesn't make much economic sense. It is a political tool to help avoid falling into a centuries-old tradition of European wars. That is why it is held together at all (great) costs.

Same goes for the Israeli mandatory military service. The Israeli military, and indeed the security needs of the country have evolved to a point where drafting everyone doesn't really make military or economic sense. But it is kept for political and civil reasons.

But when have one group that doesn't participate how can that not cause major problems?

Seems to work pretty well over here with paying the taxes. Some participate while others don’t.

You mean the group that doesn't participate (unfortunately) in daily Torah study?

Didn't know Torah study was mandated by the government.  ::)

It is not. But is fundamental to the existence of the state, despite it being founded on and tilted towards secular leanings.

It is an unfortunate situation that many Israelis don't realize. Absent the Jewish religious connection to the land, the zionist cause has no leg to stand on.

And once you add real Jewish religion to it, there is no more a Zionist idea at all  :D

Go back to the Eurozone example. Do all members participate equally?

In Israel, no one registers for the draft.  Israel issues all citizens and permanent residents with national ID numbers at birth (or naturalization) and sends out draft notices when they turn 16 or thereabouts.

Probably not what you were looking for, and you are probably happy with the answers you got.

Happy Friday, here is one for you - "Gifting thoughts":

Recently, someone treated me and my son to a sporting event. I know that these were his personal season tickets, and I was very appreciative. While at the game, I paid for "dinner" - i.e. some hotdogs and beer. While the dinner cost paled into comparison to the tickets, I felt it was an appropriate gesture.

I am also going to Israel in the near future and staying with relatives. As such, I stock up on some American things that I know they like - again, the cost is far less than I would have spent on any hotel, but still a way to show appreciation.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Is it the gesture to show appreciation, or should their be some monetary calculation going into the process?
