I think it's just to sugarcoat their overall devaluation of their program and moving to dynamic pricing.
I wish they (and other airlines) would also add points pooling for immediate family like JetBlue and BA has. I fly with my kids from time to time and end up with low point balances in their accounts that sometimes expire because I forget about them.
