Vote on the new NY State Licence Plate

I don't like having "Excelsior" on the plate, as most people don't know what it means and it just makes it look like a foreign plate. I'm also not a fan of having just the statue of liberty, because although we can all appreciate it's significance, it has recently become more of a partisan symbol. I also like the aesthetics of #3 best, so that gets my vote for three reasons.

Liberals use it to symbol conservatives that the nation is built on accepting immigrants. Not that I don't like the statue, it's just that I have a feeling that was part of the motivation for putting it on the licence plates, and it is somewhat off-putting for me.

Didn't they just start the yellow plates a few years ago? Why a new change?

In the more than 3 decades I've been living in NY I've seen them alternate between yellow and white a couple of times. (NJ alternated between pale yellow and light blue).

As usual my $0.02:

- The surcharge for existing registrations is $25. There are 11M or so registered Vehicles in NY State, so over the span of 10 years it means approximately 250-275 million in additional revenue for the state. (While the first two years will be primarily about replacing any blue and white plates still in existence, after that it seems that they will start phasing out the current blue and yellow design as plates age beyond 10 years).

- One of the articles pointed out that 3 of the 5 designs feature the statue of liberty. They suggested that the reason for this is that the liberty lovers and those notalgic for the liberty plates of the 80's/90's would split the vote, enabling the Tappan Zee Bridge plate to win to stroke the governor's ego a little more.

- I'm curious, because I've only owned NY registered Vehicles in my lifetime, how often do other states force you to change plates - for example, I know that NJ and Florida have made subtle changes to their basic plates over the years, but how often do you need to get a new one?

Also, in the article linked above Cuomo is confusing the idea of requiring new plates after 10 years with the new design. If it's about tolls reading plates correctly, then why the need for a new design? If I recall correctly, when the current gold plates were introduced the reasoning was for cameras to better read them, so why are they being changed? Not saying I love the gold, but why does it need to keep changing.

Cuomo has argued the state needs to periodically replace license plates to account for new cashless tolling technology, which takes a photograph of license plates and bills the vehicle's owner for the toll.

well that's really up to the mechanic to make the decision if it's up to par or not.
any hanky-panky mechanic will pass you when you give him five bucks 10 bucks.
   It's a nice idea but then again so many loopholes.
