What happens if you have your phone stolen, or crack your screen over the 2 years, they'll probably charge you a fortune.
Same would happen if I bought it in installments...

Not really, with installments you would just pay for the full value of the phone once if it's stolen 12 months in, with phone leasing you would pay 12 months of rental payments + the value of the phone.

Just barely, and for people like me who live in the real world with kids and better fingers how plausible is that?

Let's change the question a bit. Assuming I'll want a new phone in 2 years is there a reason not to lease?

It depends what phone you're getting.
Many high end phones you'll end up spending the same or more and have nothing to show for it at the end of 2 years and yes your phone can potentially be worth another $100 then plus you have the benefits of CC protection.

If you're willing to go with one of the models about to be upgraded like the m8 or s5 for example you can potentially save good money purchasing new on eBay.

Anyone have good ideas for a slightly smaller smartphone besides an iPhone? Max size like than a iPhone 5?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Price being equal which would you say is better? The old Moto X or the Nexus 5?

due for an upgrade soon. I have a Galaxy S5. Was going to go for the S6 Edge but want to see my options. I am nervous that the note will be too big.

whats my other choice with Android?

I'd go with the Moto X for size and slightly better battery. Though I'd say one isn't much better than the other.
It comes down to personal preference I'd say.

Verizon. thanks.

I love the S5 for removable battery and water resistant but I am open to new things. at one point I had the windows phone. It was a disaster.
