Chabad Minhagim: Pros & Cons

My father was not Chabad-raised though so I may be wrong here.

The Rebbe encourage people to add at least three, for a total of six.
People tend to do between 6 and 36, subject to the factors mentioned by Dan.

The fact is that this whole idea was novel and unique and was virtually unheard in all of torah history, literature and halacha until the last few chabbad rebbehs. This is why it became a sensitive vulnerability.
(BTW The fact that the tanoim were misnamnem is a famous kashe, dealt with by the rishonim and acharonim. Cant remember a good answer off hand)

The Admo"r Emtzoi/Mittler Rebbe quoted in the sicha was the son of the Alter Rebbe/Baal Hatanya V'Shulchan Aruch.  And this is what he saw in the Alter Rebbe's house.
This is a centuries old topic as I already told you. Stop trying to twist it into a modern invention.

Also, you may be aware that according to the Gemoro, Elokai Netzor was recited before neggel vasser, and this only changed several hundred years ago, where it became inappropriate for us to say hashem's name beforehand, and thus moideh ani was created.
I.e. Yeridas Hadoirois
The same can be applied here.

I believe that there may be a disagreement about if and why the alte rebbe slept in the succah or not. The argument may actually be about this very point. 
Its not me twisting it into a relevant argument, it was a very controversial topic in the 90's.
The rebbes main defense in the video is that it is not his chiddush.

I'm joining this conversation a bit late, I just wanted to point out to all those claiming that chabad is being 'meikil' on the Halacha of Mitzta'er, try being a guest by a lubavitcher when it's raining...
