My guess, and I'm not Lubavitch in the slightest, it's for the Rebba.

I doubt anyone would say that Lubavitchers are machmir not to sleep in the Sukkah, but Lubavitchers are definitely mehader not to sleep in the Sukkah!

Nothing to do with Chabad, I've seen the same in BP and willi, we all have Chumras
Care to post any photos of another "רעגן סוכה"? Or for that matter any other unique kind of Sukkah?

Not what you're referring to but has anyone seen the other 'רעגן סוכה/סכך'
What I'm referring to is I've seen it advertised but can find anything online of a סכך mat that made of really wide pieces of bamboo sliced down the middle so when set up concave and convex interlocked the water will run down the over the sukkah?

The only thing I found is an article from R Yair Hoffman... (besides a whole fascinating discussion in the Dirshu M"B as to the kashrus of such...)

(I bet with a little searching there's a thread about this somewhere )

Just bumped into this thread, the picture reminded me of the good old days that our deck was big enough for 2 sukka's we had one big sukka with a shlock and heater and a secondary small sukka in case it rains we called it the Emergency Sukka. (I'm not chabad and neve lived in CH)

Drinking water in the rain in the succah is something even the tur wasn't machmir on.
The gemarah (yerushalmi) mentions that rav huna was traveling and thirsty yet refused to drink even water out of the sukkah. The pri megadim explains that although water doesn't require sukkah, and even real food during rain (comparable to traveling) doesn't require sukkah, nevertheless he was machmir on 1. water 2. while traveling 2. even though he was thirsty

See http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=16024&st=&pgnum=226

And specifically about the hiddur http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=16024&st=&pgnum=233
I don't want to get dragged in here. So don't get me wrong, I am not addressing the rebbe, just what you post as your understanding of the minhag.

With all due respect, the Rebbe clearly explains that the reason you and the chasidim do not sleep in the succah is because of a petur of psychological tzar.

He does not address why you, who are "mehader" to eat in succah, even when potur because of real physical tzar, don't sleep. (Other than say that if the rebbeh didn't do it than you shouldn't even if his reasons of petur don't apply. This too is not sufficiently explained. How is it compared to a hiddur in haddasim..)
I don't understand how when you are "nebach potur" you call it a hiddur.

(Just btw, I happen to have recently learned,  the inyan of psychological tzar. - imho it is pretty clear from the poskim that there is a chiyuv leyesuvey daatei in most cases... Interesting stuff)

I disagree with your comparison and conclusion.
Water is a well established chumrah.. it's brought down in a Mishnah.
Traveling also has sources to be machmir.

I'm looking for a source to drink water in the rain. -pre chassidik era.

I might be wrong, but I think that the relationship that Lubavitchers have with the Rebbe is different from anything seen elsewhere in this generation.

As such, reread the following paragraph and you will see the hiddur. (You also have to take into account the multiple meanings of ״מהדר״)

That's the point. For R' Acha there was no such thing as "extra vertle" יעדער ווארט איז געווען הייליג.

So in which cases was the small Sukkah used (other than possibly the first כזית on the first night of sukkos if it rained all night)?

In a letter to rav shlomo yosef zevin (editor of encyclopedia talmudis) the rebbe refers to it as "nekudas hahiskashrus"
