First of all, don't ask how I explain it, ask how the Alter Rebbe explains it.
Second of all, Rome is a little far from Calabria....

And because the whole minhag to take yanev is based on the pedigree, once this got ruined in the 50's and 60s, why continue to take esrogim that now are difficult to know for sure that they are not grafted?

First of all, the reason I said you is because it seems that Chabadtzkers know quite a bit about their minhagim etc., as evidenced from this thread, so I figured you might already have the answer.

Secondly, it's not a midrash, it's a Gemara in Shabbos and Sanhedrin.

Finally, in the link that Dan shared it says besheim the Rebbe that איטליה של יון does refer to Southern Italy.

First of all, the reason I said you is because it seems that Chabadtzkers know quite a bit about their minhagim etc., as evidenced from this thread, so I figured you might already have the answer.

In that case maybe different wording would have been more apropriate, writing "You" comes across as very combative...

Secondly, it's not a midrash, it's a Gemara in Shabbos and Sanhedrin.

I never said it was a Medrash...

Personally I would take issue with anyone who takes both the Gemarah (and the Kabbalah) too literally.
If you paid closer attention to the link (and to the Sefer Haminhagim I posted earlier) you'd notice that the MAIN reason we use Calabria Esrogim is because of the Chazakah and NOT because of the Kaballah about Moshe sending Shluchim.
