The deal with chabad and sukkah decorations: there are many reasons given for it here is one:

'שיחות קודש' תש"ל ח"א עמ' 129-133. וראה 'אוצר מנהגי חב"ד', תשרי, עמ' רסז.

well turns out I made the silly mistake of thinking that what is written in the Shu"a character is meant to be taken at face value and therefore was nichshal in sleeping in the sukkah.
