Semi-relevant aside:
My rov was relaying how when he lived in toronto, he once went to the purim seuda of a chashuva lubavitcher whose children he learned with. The host had a bottle of absolut, and 2 apples, which he cut up into pieces. He would take a shot, then eat a piece of apple, continuing until he finished both the bottle and the apples - and he didn't get particularly drunk. (No idea if this is a lubavitcher thing, or just this guy's shtick.) Something about apples counteracting the alcohol in some way, getting you less drunk or less sick or something.
At which point I chimed in, well you know what they say, an apple a day...
