12/15 Passenger vans
« on: September 08, 2019, 05:52:28 PM »
Minivans are cute for 4 kids, but at this point they just don't cut it at all.

(I'm actually surprised that we don't see hundreds of these on the roads in the community..)

Just started researching this. Apparently there are two or three options: the Ford Transit, the Chevy Express and the Nissan Ev series

Does anyone have experience with these? Pros/cons, prices? Can these be leased? Etc

Must have easy access, ability to get back there to buckle ppl in etc. (not a huge step up), tons of cargo room (not driving a truck and also struggling to fit a stroller etc)
Only really need 8 or 9 seats now but a minivan is horribly tight.

One more option, mercedes sprinter.

i would advise you to take each of them on a test drive (if you can rent them for a road trip with the kids, even better) by then you'll have 1 or 2 crossed off your list decision making would be easier...

There's a surprising amount of people that stop at 6 kids because that's all that'll fit in their minivan :D

You cant even fit 2 kids in a car. Two car seats take up the whole back row, and then you have to struggle to fit that double stroller and your wifes shaitel and dress in the trunk. Forget about two kids and your clothing.

Unless you wait till the first is out of a stroller before having a second.
I'm not who you think I am.

In the past the Sprinter has been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, Freightliner, and Volkswagen nameplates. In the U.S. it is built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz. Rebadged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter.

The most similar to a mini van vs a truck would be a Chevy Express Or a Ford Econoline.
I've had the Chevy Express which was amazing loved it.
Just miss the old ones from 2004 which had two doors on both sides while all the new ones have only one door in the back.
Step not to bad, nice cargo room in the 12 pass vs the 15 pass.
Nice steering, stereo system, comfortable seats.

Kids seem happy when they come in and even more excited when they leave!
All jokes aside a nice car from my experience!

Have very little faith in Chevy's though.. My experience with an impala is that stupid things start breaking after a couple of years.. cheap wiring etc.

And the Chevy Suburban, Tahoe, Equinox, Camaro, Colorado, blazor, Silverado, Corvette, trailblizer ,traverse.

Lots of solid cars I must say!
Yes they have lower end trucks but many well built cars, it's not for no reason every police van is a Chevy express, ever wandered? A decent solid car made for every day use.
No matter what car, every car needs maintenance and to follow the manuals recommendation for what and when to repair and change stuff, that includes rotating tires, spark plugs, wires, oil change, oils and fluids, brakes and rotors,
Suspension and a whole lot more..
Just brining it out there for you to decide, obviously make a smart move and don't regret what you did, I suggest you get ahold of these few cars and take a test drive and see what you think feels the most up to par.

My guess is that one of the main reasons you don't see many more of the 12/15 passenger vans is the absence of lease/financing deals similar to what one can find on minivans (might be related to lower residual value).

I know that at some point I was looking into it and the payments were a lot higher. I've rented the Fords a couple of times for family trips and the entire family loves them.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

-1
I've had Ford Econoline E150 which has a lower suspension than the Chevy Express but still felt very trucky. At this point I have a Transit and find it to be much more mini-van like. I recommend the Transit. We have the 15. With all seats in there is very little luggage space but we took out the two middle back seats and that gives us plenty for the whole family. It is also easier to access all of the seats with the seats separated 2/1 than the big benches in the econoline.

You don't get a new one. They devalue much more in the first year. A leasing place once told me that 12/15 vans are the only type he doesn't getnew for this reason.

FTFY.

And the fact that you see so many leased minivans in the community proves my point. One of the reasons people lease is because they feel like they are much less likely to have issues with a car in its first three years (and if there is anything wrong, it would be covered by the warranty).
