Top Reasons To Stay On The Derech
« on: September 09, 2019, 03:00:18 PM »
We should have a thread "Top reasons to stay On The Derech.."
For me it would have to be shabbos.
In todays day and age anyone who experiences shabbos gets a unbelievable vacation from all mind noise  once every week.
When i wake up Thursday morning and realize shabbos is only 2 days away I'm in a super happy mood just thinking about it. No I'm no big frummy i just live in a fast paced tech / projects / life craziness and shabbos is so such a great experience.

P.S My friend once told me "well you dont know how it is not to keep Shabbos" to which i responded: I do i experience it every Sunday, and it sucks.

Sorry to hear that your Sunday sucks

But otherwise a nice thought

To be fair, a lot of people keep a digital sabbath or something similar every week and they are not even Jewish.

To me, there is one reason and one reason only to stay on the derech - you believe in hashem, and want to follow in Hashem's path.

Any other reason to stay on the derech is superficial - if someone is truly an atheist - however much you agree or disagree with their opinion/lifestyle - having them keep shabbos or kosher for some superficial reason is kind of silly. Does kosher truly existing in the absence of belief in Hashem? If you don't believe then kosher is just some random diet.

As for those who believe but go OTD, some of the reasons to stay might be reasons to leave - for example, some might suggest that you should stay OnTD to remain close with your family, but maybe family members are the reason that they went OTD. And I could say to them - "You still believe, maybe you don't want to go OTD, but stay OnTD in a better environment".

Good luck imposing a discretionary "digital sabbath" on colleagues. I suspect it would be trampled the moment a major project or deadline comes up. With shabbos, people understand that I "turn into a pumpkin" at sundown on Friday (their words, not mine) and respect it.

Shabbos is the best.

Plain and simple.

To be fair, a lot of people keep a digital sabbath or something similar every week and they are not even Jewish.
There is no way that is remotely close to the same. I can't imagine disconnecting for a full day at will, yet when it comes to shabbos I love every moment off the grid.

I think a lot of people are focusing on this quote:
To be fair, a lot of people keep a digital sabbath or something similar every week and they are not even Jewish.
more than this one:
To me, there is one reason and one reason only to stay on the derech - you believe in hashem, and want to follow in Hashem's path.

Any other reason to stay on the derech is superficial - if someone is truly an atheist - however much you agree or disagree with their opinion/lifestyle - having them keep shabbos or kosher for some superficial reason is kind of silly. The way I read the OP, was what are reasons for someone to stay on the derech.  Implying that they are on the derech now, and thinking of getting off of it. For someone in that state, I can't imagine shabbos alone is enough reason to stay frum. I was merely suggesting a way that they could keep the partial serenity of shabbos without a religious connection.

Don't get me wrong - I love shabbos. Almost all of my BT/Ger friends cite at as one of the reasons that they became frum. And while I don't have too many OTD friends, I have yet to find someone who said - "I was going to leave it all behind, but I didn't want to give up my shabbos, even though I don't believe enough to stay frum"

Methinks you missed the point.

Let's hear the rest of it. Why would a 'snag' be more likely to say Chanukah makes him want to go OTD?

Chanukah is so rich in every way, in nigleh, Chassidus, minhagim, and even b'gashmius the minhagim are great. As a family it's amazing, it's a great story, it's loads of fun for the kids. There is so much symbolism. It's just awesome no matter which way you look at it.

Someone who doesn't appreciate any of that is a snag. In the context I'm using it it has nothing to do with Chabad, misnagdim or anything. A Lubavitcher can be just as much of a snag as anyone.

A snag is someone who leaves in the 7th inning of a tie playoff game to beat the traffic.
