Any Tomtom we should consider?
We were very happy with our TT for the last ~10 years.

That's already a much older model.
What would be the problem with that?
Thanks.

Garmin is supposed to be better (but not sure whether TomTom still has any non smartphone traffic ones.)
What would be the problem with that?
Thanks.
In general outdated technology has more chances of not working well.(And it's not like the new recent models, and in new condition, are prohibitedly expensive. So I wouldn't say it's worth the discount.)

The newer model for it would be the Garmin Drive 53 (https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-DriveTM-Navigator-High-Resolution-Touchscreen/dp/B0BSVQ12MS?th=1) which has included traffic with the traffic cable.
You're sure this has lifetime maps & traffic?
It's not clear from the description.

Yes sure.

The changed a little bit the branding/labeling in the new model and aren't using anymore the LMT notation for it.

But this two items for the product details make it clear to me:
  • Outsmart traffic jams or slowdowns with alerts that suggest alternate routes; Garmin Traffic comes ready to use right out of the box with the included traffic cable
  • Includes detailed map updates of North America

I just don't feel confident that it means lifetime traffic.
I've read that some models start charging after a while.

Which models?  Can you link to where it says that?

As far as I know they don't even have a mechanism to charge for this type of traffic. It's available on the airwaves for anyone with the hardware (traffic cable.)

Right now I can't find where I read that.
It was in Amazon reviews of a Garmin GPS.

Is that why our 13 year old Tomtom's traffic is very inaccurate even though originally it was very accurate?

    Possible.

But it's also possible that this whole method of delivering traffic is neglected and doesn't get updated very well. And it's likely also an effect of the fact that there are less such devices out there nowadays, and one of the sources for traffic is the way your car moves. (While this is now true on Google/Waze which has such accurate data cuz it has that many users.)
Right now I can't find where I read that.
It was in Amazon reviews of a Garmin GPS.
Checked again and it seems to be the case for LMT-S devices (that typically get only traffic when connected through smartphones) if you buy an addon traffic cable. See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=yNViasBAPx6d8QGE2N4Lz6

Note: Devices with T or Traffic in the model name do not need to update the following.  Devices with LMT-S in the model name only need to do this if you buy a traffic cable or subscription separately.

It’s been years since we tried Garmin traffic vs Waze head to head, and it was laughable. Garmin often wouldn’t know traffic if you were sitting in it bumper to bumper, and its rerouting was lousy.

So what's a non-smartphone person supposed to do if not willing to pay monthly for Waze?

What would be the same (lifetime maps & traffic) but also have wifi for updates?
For a little more it's probably worth it.
    Thanks.

Be willing to pay... It's relatively not that expansive if you have one of those pay-per-usage service that the kosher Waze devices have.

But of course it will cost you more than a Garmin with silly traffic.

The Garmin DriveSmart 55 (or Garmin DriveSmart 65) seem to have what you're looking for https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M98Z8DD/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_nw_mr?th=1

Based on the reviews, it seems like traffic only works through a smartphone.

There are no monthly fee ones:

Which specific review? Quote the text.
Cuz the product details very clearly says:
    Quote
Garmin Traffic is ready to use right out of the box — without use of a smartphone
Maybe that was for another variant of the listing, or it's talking about the more accurate "life traffic" that your can get with the smartphone app.
