Do you charge your phone all night?
« on: September 10, 2019, 04:16:02 PM »
This seems to be like a boxers or briefs question. Some hold charging it all night will greatly reduce the overall life of the battery and others hold it wont have an affect.

What do you do?
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Charging all night has nothing to do with the problem.

The problem is that Lithium batteries last longest if they are kept between 50-80%. If you always top them off or if you let them drain to nothing, they degrade faster. There are apps that will cap charging at 80%.

If you upgrade your phone every 2 years the amount of degradation won't matter that much as you'll just upgrade by the time it gets bad. But if you hold onto your phones longer you should certainly look into that.

I always keep my Tesla between 50-80%. They recommend always just keeping it plugged in with an 80% cap, though that's mostly so that it doesn't drain to zero.

the cost of a replacement battery should also be considered usually $150 if done professionally. On a phone over $300+ this can extend the usable life of a device an additional 2 years without any pain of not having a fully charged phone

What do you do?
You can charge to 100% without an issue. The main problem is keep topping the battery off which is what happens overnight. The other main culprit is the new fast chargers. You ever feel your battery getting hot when charging? Two things that batteries hate is cold and heat.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

+1 if charging overnight there's no need for a quickcharge

What's with a laptop?
Is it a problem if it's always plugged in?

Yes no different it has a battery just like your phone has a battery just a bit bigger.
You remind me of a cousin of mine who popped his battery out and kept his laptop plugged in versus having his battery as he claimed it would drain his battery while charging it, and  only use his battery when he was traveling.

I actually keep my devices charging all night but with a power bank that cuts off the charging after reaching 100%.
In my opinion all new chargers should have the ability to set your desired charger amount, and once that's reached the phone will automatically stop charging.

"In iOS 13, a new charging algorithm will keep your iPhone at 80% when charging overnight. That algorithm will determine when you typically wake up and start the day, and restart the charging sequence to give you fully charged battery when you wake up."
How iOS 13 Will Save Your iPhone’s Battery (by Not Fully Charging It)
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Definitely shortens battery life when charging over night. I used to, but with my last phone or 2, I never do. Never charge over shabbos either. I have seen major changes in battery life.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.
