I don't get it. So someone touched the chicken. Aren't all the germs getting cooked off anyways?

Yes and washing does nothing but spread contamination.

The gross factor has nothing to do with germs.

I make a point to kasher (at least some) of my kapporos chickens at home (and yes, they do get rinsed, as that is part of the process) so that my kids grow up getting a real experience of what needs to happen, rather than just "kosher chicken comes from the store and gets cooked".

Or you could have gone on shlichus to yehupitz like my in laws who kasher every year

I know, right? I stopped eating steak, I just read the recipes. Also, it's a wonder they ever kashered a chicken without anyone learning how to do it.

How important do you feel this is in todays day and age?
