Not sure which version of the iPod you have, but try resetting it. GIYF.

I assumed (perhaps stupidly) that all the songs on his iPod were also on his computer.

OK, yeah, that was stupid.

From how you phrased the question seems like this is the issue.

Browse to the iPod (in windows explorer, make sure to show hidden files and folders in the preferences) and the music files are still there (filenames will be messed up). You should be able to rename the files based on ID3 data (if you have it).

Happened to me once before a similar story - I put my iPod 80gb (which I had) and it was formatted to windows and I put it in a Mac and when I took it out the memory was still full but nothing on the iPod - so I went to the hidden files but I don't remember how I renamed them, I think if you put it in iTunes it reads the codes

It's in folder options which is in the 'tools' menu, it's called (show hidden files and fllders). I don't remember offhand where it is in Windows7.

Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

Click the View tab.

Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

You need to browse to a specific folder, I think it's called 'iPod-control' or something like that.

Is it on automatic sync with another computer? If it is you would have to click on manual sync.
