Israel Travel Tips?
« on: July 23, 2009, 01:25:44 AM »
Well I'm going back to Israel in August for 2 weeks.

Any cell phone recommendations?  Should I bring my world phone and buy a sim card or rent a phone in the US? Which way will calls to the US be cheaper?

Can you rent a wireless modem in Israel for 2 weeks, or is it better to pay $8.99/day for a 3G modem with unlimited data from Amigo?

Any other tips?

Use your Centro as a modem like last time.

Get magic jack for the 30 day trial right before you leave.

I doubt that magic jack will perform reliably enough as a phone using the centro as a modem...anyone have any experience with that?

simtoisrael.com has good rates and service and delivers that SIM card before you leave. There are lots of reviews on the Israel TripAdvisor forums for them. For those going for a 1 month or more it's worth the trouble and cost to simply sign up for a line of service with a low cost carrier such as Golan once in Israel.

+1

But I was confused with cell phone recommendations talk... that's when I saw the date was 10 years ago!
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

On my way from Eilat to Jerusalem I swiped my card for 349nis at Dor Alon Tzukim on the 90 about 100km out of Eilat, and when I got the charge on my card it was for $125, which is around $30 more than what I should have paid. The driver who swiped my card didn't get a receipt (Guy didn't give it to him, now in retrospect i see why). What should i do?

IME in Israel the gas stations post a large charge, then refund the difference to what you actually consumed. Wait a week or two then dispute it.

That's what someone told me few minutes ago. I didn't know this. Good to know. Thanks.
